I am a licensed clinical fellow at The Briggs Institute, Inc. The therapists at the Institute are graduates of Lipscomb University's Master of Marriage and Family Therapy Program. As the only COAMFTE accredited program in Nashville, the Lipscomb MFT program has earned its fine reputation by meeting the highest academic and clinical experience standards in the country. Because we practice under the supervision of the Lipscomb MFT program core faculty, we remain connected to academia. This means our work is informed by state-of-the-art scientific research that most private practice therapists can't easily access.

" We manage however, don't really feel plugged-in to life, family or even our self.
CLARITY, PEACE of MIND, CONFIDENCE, JOY and a SKILL SET by which to create and sustain a happier, healthier life, sound good? Let's face it, despite our best efforts life gets crazy at times. We can ride the slow gradual wave of disconnectedness until one day we wake up wondering "How the heck did I get here?!" Without warning we find ourselves in what I call an "uncomfortable comfortable." This turbulence is a result of life unfolding in ways we never imagined. Situations we've tried our best to "deal with" because "that's just life."

I believe we all have inherent self worth and value that can become over-shadowed by trauma, adverse experiences, stress, and mental health concerns. Life can be challenging, but you don’t have to do it alone. I utilize attachment-focused, experiential, somatic, mindfulness, and other modalities to promote healing and realignment with our authentic selves. My experience and areas of interest include: trauma, substance abuse and addiction, eating disorders, codependency, anxiety, depression, relationship and intimacy issues, and family of origin concerns. I enjoy working with individual adults, teens, couples, and families.

When kids’ emotions are high, logic and language can be low, and when we can’t look to reason, we should look to connection. Through a lens of compassionate curiosity, I work to hold the space needed to explore heightened feelings/emotions. My passion is working with toddlers, children, adolescents, & young adult women seeking connection, balance, self-awareness, and healing when facing emotional/behavioral struggles, school-related issues, family/relationship challenges, life-transitions, and self-esteem. I believe every human, no matter how young, can find healing, but I'm here to walk alongside you or your child on your journey.

Healing is multidimensional, so I use many experiential/somatic interventions including EMDR, play/expressive arts therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and mindfulness.
I work with kids, adolescents, and adults who feel stuck; they are experiencing symptoms such as anxiety, depression, relationship problems, and disordered eating. Many have carried the weight of traumatic experiences for as long as they can remember. Many feel that they spend excess time worrying about food and their bodies and find it hard to engage fully in their lives. They continue to feel out of control of their relationships, their bodies, and their emotions. They feel numb and isolated on the surface, and deep down feel hurt and helpless.

Hi, I’m Matt (he/him). I am trained as a Marriage and Family Therapist, which means I think a lot about how relationships shape our experience. This certainly includes relationships with partners, family, and friends, but also our relationships with self and the systems in which we live. Finding balance and harmony in these relationships can be challenging, if not overwhelming. I count it as a joy and privilege to be invited to ally with you in this pursuit.

My approach combines Person-Centered, Family Systems, CBT, and trauma-informed CBT models and I adapt it to meet the specific needs and personality of each client.
Hello and thank you for stopping by. Counseling is a very personal journey and it is important to find a counselor you can trust and feel comfortable with. I always encourage potential clients to research, compare, and even email or call prior to the first session so any initial questions or concerns can be answered and addressed. Over the past 20 years both my training and experience in mental health have been in working with people with history of trauma, mood and anxiety type disorders, relationship difficulties, behavioral struggles, parenting issues, and life transitions.

I hold a master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Trevecca Nazarene University, as well as a bachelor's degree in Human Development and Family Studies from Auburn University.
Regardless of where you find yourself, you deserve to feel supported and heard. Life can bring many seasons. Some seasons can be challenging, making us question our worth and purpose. Other seasons feel permanent, leaving us feeling stuck and hopeless. Or maybe we experience a change, forcing us to shift and transition. My desire is to meet you exactly where you are, no matter the season you find yourself in. I hope to walk with you towards a place of growth as you realize your strengths and self-worth.

Accepting new couples who desire a better relationship. Reactivity and emotional turmoil in relationships are often signs of potential growth. One of the most satisfying experiences in my work is coaching a couple or family toward a new way to communicate. A way that increases their connection to one another. It is an honor and privilege to facilitate and witness it everyday. As a licensed Marriage and Family, and Certified IMAGO Therapist, improving communication and increasing connectivity are what keep me motivated and charged to do what I do, day in and day out. I welcome the challenge of your relationships.

Life can take turns that present difficult challenges. We experience those challenges in a number of different ways: difficulties adjusting to new circumstances, confusion in deciding on a career path, struggles in relationships, or coping with loss. Often we feel anxious, depressed, confused, or overwhelmed and need help dealing with feelings and problems that seem beyond our control. Help may come from friends, family members, or significant others, but in some cases help is needed from a trained professional. Therapy is a process that can help people identify more effective strategies both to cope with difficult situations and to achieve their goals.

I offer a plan of action and a variety of tools for most anyone suffering from the family disease of addiction.
I began counseling in New York when I was working as a chaplain during graduate school. I began in community centers, hospitals and prisons. During that time I discovered I have a genuine connection and desire to work with people suffering from the disease of addiction. When I returned to Nashville (the city of my birth), I began teaching middle school and high school, primarily with underserved populations. There I found that same connection with hard to reach youth, adolescents and their families. It is my sincere goal to help individuals, couples and families find a path to mental and emotional health and serenity.

Taking care of yourself, your relationships, and your soul are some the most important things you can do. However, sometimes stress can pile up, relationships get strained, or unexpected losses leave an empty place in life. Sometimes even church can hurt. When these things happen it can get overwhelming resulting in many more questions than answers. It is a privilege for me to walk with people who are experiencing challenges and help them heal from wounds, solve problems and glean some redemptive meaning from the challenges they face.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
