Are you troubled by self doubt, questioning your or your partner's level of commitment, or contemplating walking away from a relationship? Perhaps you are feeling disconnected from others or frustrated by an unsatisfying sex life. Is the conflict in your family extreme? Are you struggling to coparent effectively? You may be single and exasperated by the drama that sometimes comes along with dating. Or, a parent who is helplessly watching your child or adolescent struggle educationally or in social relationships. If any of these statements resonate with you, I can help you navigate your journey to contentment, confidence, and bliss.

My approach combines Person-Centered, Family Systems, CBT, and trauma-informed CBT models and I adapt it to meet the specific needs and personality of each client.
Hello and thank you for stopping by. Counseling is a very personal journey and it is important to find a counselor you can trust and feel comfortable with. I always encourage potential clients to research, compare, and even email or call prior to the first session so any initial questions or concerns can be answered and addressed. Over the past 20 years both my training and experience in mental health have been in working with people with history of trauma, mood and anxiety type disorders, relationship difficulties, behavioral struggles, parenting issues, and life transitions.

Areas of special clinical interest include trauma, relationship issues, self-worth, anxiety, depression, life transitions, couple/family conflict, substance abuse (including family members impacted by addiction), and grief/loss.
I am passionate about seeing lives and relationships restored. I recognize the courage it takes to come to therapy and believe that transformation happens in the context of relationships when people feel heard and understood. My hope is to invite clients into a safe space where we have the opportunity to honestly confront painful and uncomfortable issues.

Life gets more complicated every year for young adults, and it can feel impossible to cope with daily demands. Work, school, relationships, feeding yourself, family, self-care—it can all become hard to juggle. I can help you manage the chaos and create calm. I specialize in working with young adults who are in life transitions. It’s common for young adults to struggle with disordered eating, anxiety, depression, identity, and academic/job stress. Often times, perfectionism and our inner critic make things worse, deepening depression, ramping up anxiety, and complicating relationships with food. Can you relate?

I am quick to laugh, love to learn, and value my relationships with friends and family most of all.
Thank you for your interest in my practice. Choosing the right therapist is undoubtably an important decision. In fact, research has demonstrated that which therapist you work with matters far more than the techniques or approach he or she employs. I work with adults of all ages and am especially drawn to helping people who are open-minded, motivated and eager to learn. I have a passion for helping people improve their relationships (both with themselves and others), and I also love working with people in therapy groups.

Many clients seek therapy to work on issues relating to anxiety, depression, substance use, family of origin, trauma, relationship conflicts, life transition, grief, or just feeling stuck or under-motivated.
Honest self-reflection is the answer to so many of our problems. At many points throughout our lives, we learn to ease life’s burdens by shutting down, acting out, or running away in attempts to find relief. Even our most destructive coping strategies were often the best answers we could find at the time to manage our anxieties, our desires, and our pain. When we allow ourselves the opportunity to slow down and reflect on our lives, both past and present, we deepen our understanding and insight. And, as we explore our lives without moralizing and harshness, we develop genuine compassion and greater trust in ourselves.

Every individual is worthy of healing and peace, and my favorite part about working with clients is working with them as they find the courage to live out this belief. Journeys of healing are sometimes scary, so using a holistic and collaborative approach, I endeavor to create a space that is nonjudgmental, safe, and peaceful as I aid clients in their work. My approach to therapy includes a combination of evidence-based practices including Restoration therapy and Internal Family Systems therapy, as well as Gottman Method interventions, common factors, and the expressive arts.

This private practice is unlike many others. I am a pre-licensed clinical fellow at The Briggs Institute, Inc. Therapists at the Institute are graduates of Lipscomb University's Master of Marriage and Family Therapy Program, which holds its graduates to the highest standards in the field. Because we practice under the supervision of the Lipscomb MFT program core faculty, we remain connected to academia. This means our work is informed by state-of-the-art scientific research that most other private practice therapists cannot easily access.

It is my dream and honor to help clients who feel stuck in some way in their lives and relationships work towards health, wholeness, and growth. This "stuck" feeling may show up in many different areas in life, such as relational disconnection and conflict, recurring family-of-origin issues, struggles with anxiety and depression, or generally feeling like you're at a crossroads. I firmly believe that relational wounds can only heal in relationship. Therefore, I am dedicated to creating and fostering the safe and secure therapeutic space needed for my clients to begin the hard work of looking deeper and working towards health.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
