My services allow for individuals, couples and family members to gain insight and feel empowered to cope with and support loved ones or themselves managing a Mental Health issue and/or Substance Abuse.
Just like diet and exercise is for your body, therapy is for your mind and emotions. As a therapist, my goal is to support you on your journey of understanding your true self and desires. While your past cannot be changed it also does not have to determine your future and with proper support you can stop reliving past choices. Using various clinical approaches, we will work together to help you (1) understanding your current symptoms and (2) develop a path forward. In my work with clients, I utilize motivational interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

My work is especially helpful to those suffering from depression and the loss of loved ones whether its via death, or divorce/separation. I first address a re-focusing on the love of self and move outwards, because without developing or healing our true love of self, we can't effectively love others.

With 25 years of experience in behavior health services, I can create a compassionate and supportive environment to begin working with parts of you that have become stuck by using psychodynamic and trauma-focused approaches such as EMDR therapy, internal family systems (IFS), motivational interviewing, and mindfulness.
Many of us may become stuck at different stages in our lives for myriad reasons. Its possible you may or may not be aware of what events may have led to this which can manifest in mental health and/or substance use difficulties. Examples range from traumatic events such as abuse, neglect, and death of loved ones; oft under-emphasized circumstances such as daily stress, breakups, life changes/transitions, and loss of employment; or broader systemic issues such as racism, poverty, and other types of discrimination. If you are looking to identify the stuck parts to help all of you move forward, this is a good place to start.

What would it look like for you to live your life authentically, meaningfully and free? Together, we can find out. We may explore how your family system and trauma adaptations are getting in the way of your ability to manage moods and set boundaries with others. Or maybe you’ve had experiences where you question your self-worth, asking yourself, “Am I good enough? Am I enough?” We may explore where these beliefs and expectations come from, and how to establish self-compassion. Or maybe you’re finding it challenging to regulate your emotions, so we may discover ways to self-regulate and become more grounded in the present.

Greetings, my name is Dr. Allena M. Moncrief and I have been providing therapeutic services to clients in Pennsylvania since 2010. I obtained my PhD from Drexel University in the field of Couple and Family Therapy in 2017. As a psychotherapist, I understand the decision to enter psychotherapy can be extremely challenging for some individuals. Thus, I strive to meet individuals where they are in the therapeutic process. This process involves helping individuals explore the root of their difficulties/roadblocks and assisting them with creating a roadmap that will lead to a more fulfilling and enjoyable life.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
