Connection. My goal is to first get to know you. To understand what it is that you are needing to get your life on the most helpful trajectory. Maybe you're anxious, depressed or experiencing loss. Or maybe for you it's that you feel disconnected from your teenager or you're a teen irritated by your parents. Recently married at the young age of 30, I also have some insight in working through relationships as well. I will work to help you interact with all the pieces of your life that contribute to your struggle. This might include your social life, family life and spiritual life.

I am trained comprehensively in EMDR, Internal Family Systems, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, with a focus on complex trauma and PTSD.
Hello! My name is Sarah and I go by Sierra (They/Them), and I am a therapist deeply rooted in the diverse tapestry of Oregon's landscape. As a first-generation student and native Oregonian, my upbringing straddled the worlds of blue-collar loggers and counterculture hippies, shaping my unique perspective on life's complexities. My academic journey, marked by an undergraduate education at the University of Oregon and a Master's degree from the University of Denver, culminated in the fulfillment of my lifelong dream of becoming a therapist.

Therapy is largely inspired and informed by my training in Emotion Focused Therapy for Individuals and Couples, Internal Family Systems Therapy, Existential-Humanism, Family Systems Theories, Mindfulness and Experiential Interventions, Solution-Focused and the Gottman Method.
I specialize in relationships, assisting individuals and couples to deepen connection and heal the past. Therapy can be a transformational process of self-discovery facilitated by deeper levels of awareness and change. I believe we have an inherent ability to heal ourselves. I offer the experience of mindful observation, acceptance and compassion, so you may offer the same unconditional positive regard toward yourself and others. Sitting in close and conscious relationship with a skilled therapist can be a profound vehicle for this process. I use an integrative approach recognizing the interconnectedness of body, mind, and spirit.

Welcome! I enjoy working with individuals and couples, and walking alongside them in their healing. My work with clients considers biological, psychological, social, and spiritual factors. I specialize in working with clients who are experiencing relational distress, sex concerns, infertility/pregnancy issues, transracial/transnational family dynamics, processing trauma, religion and spirituality, body-image concerns, or low self esteem.

I gravitate towards a relational/family systems model, but use many other modalities, such as CBT, motivational interviewing, etc.
My Caseload is Currently Full. Most of us have difficulties being able to live the life we would like to live. Sometimes it can be hard to see what within us is getting in the way of achieving our goals. We do not exist in a vacuum, other people play a part in why we are who we are, and it takes people to help us create lasting change. My focus is to meet you where you are and help you grow right there, to clear away what is confusing and stifling, and to help you be wholly yourself. I also specialize in ADHD skills building and Career Counseling.

Reflecting this, my counseling approach focuses on how individuals relate to both themselves and their family systems, recognizing the influences of the past and present.
Looking for a therapist can be complicated, so let's keep it simple: I treat individual clients and couples. I primarily treat anxiety, depression, and trauma. I have a long history of supporting Autistic and ADHD folks - neurodivergency of all kinds is welcome here! I believe that most problems have their roots in the past, have the opportunity to be changed in the present, and can provide us the key for a hopeful future. If you are looking for a quiet and accepting place that can help you create thoughtful and sustainable changes, my office is a great place to be.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
