I am open to working with anyone interested in pursuing therapy; some examples of challenges I am skilled at working with are anxiety, depression, interpersonal challenges, grief, life transitions, relationships, gender, sexuality, family issues, existential challenges, and individuation.
I believe that anyone can benefit from therapy. Whether you’re facing life’s challenges, experiencing anxiety or depression, or you are just interested in growth and strengthening your sense of self; we all need a neutral person to talk to from time to time.

My training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, family systems, shame resilience and The Daring Way(tm) will help light the way forward; whether we work individually or alongside your loved ones.
Reaching out for help can be terrifying especially when we're hurting. Throughout the past decade I've worked with University of Houston's Graduate College of Social Work, Menninger Clinic, The Council on Recovery and Montrose Center. I have specific interest in working with men and couples who are looking to deepen intimacy within themselves and in their relationships. As an educator and clinical supervisor, I offer guidance to students as they establish and fine-tune their love for this work. I commit myself to co-creating a therapeutic environment where safety and growth are of top priority. We are in this together.

I integrate different approaches tailored to each individual, couple, or family, utilizing emotion focused therapy (EFT), elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).
None of us come out of childhood without some cuts and bruises. Sometimes physical, but more oftentimes emotional. For many, these emotional wounds are still tender, open, lightly dressed with a bandage, forgotten, or even neglected. So when these emotions get touched we find ourselves reacting in ways that aren’t in line with the kind of person we want to be.

I have sought out specialized training in cognitive behavioral therapy, emotionally focused therapy, and family systems therapy.
It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to work with teen boys and their parents, adult men, and couples. My specialities in my work adult men involve high-functioning anxiety, low self-esteem, trauma, and/or depression. My skill in working with all clients on enhancing their relationships serves my couples work nicely; I focus on how a couple experiences emotion, on verbal and non-verbal communication, and on enriching closeness and intimacy.

I am interested in helping people with primary attachment issues. I work with couples dealing directly with their attachment problems with each other. I work with individuals who are looking internally to figure out their obstacles to developing intimate partnerships. In both my individual and couples work I usually explore the family of origin as one source of understanding and improving love relationships. My style is collaborative and exploratory while I maintain a hopefully transparent point of view. I look at psychotherapy as an unusual conversation where both people are focused on one to help that person grow and change.

Beyond general personal growth counseling, I also specialize in assisting individuals whose lives have been, to varying degrees, dismantled by non-life-threatening physical health issues. Symptoms and what we tell ourselves can disrupt the flow of home, relationship, and work life. Lives can shrink to ways of being in the world that are unfamiliar, scary, and unsettling – leading us to wonder who we’ve become, what our futures hold, etc. Family members, friends, and health care providers can assist us, though may lack the experience/knowledge necessary to help map out and lead us through the intricacies of the journey.

I work with clients to offer serious relief from the effects of trauma, depression and anxiety on their lives. Tools like EMDR and Internal Family Systems, as well the creation of a judgement-free space to talk can bring hope to the stuck parts of our worlds, and finally allow us to be present in our own lives again. Finding relief can feel like taking a first deep breath after being underwater for a long time, and that's an outcome worth fighting together for. Please email to learn more and find our if we make a good therapy team.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
