I also specialize in therapy with queer-identified and trans-identified individuals and the surrounding issues of coming out, questioning, transitioning, family concerns, relationship dynamics, and self-esteem.
Insight is good, but change is better! If you are strugglng with anxiety, depression, or low self-esteem, you may have been "just living with it" for awhile. Ask yourself: "How would my life be different if I didn't feel this way?" Seeking support can be a scary step, but when you are ready for change, it can be an enjoyable process, even when it is hard work or explores painful issues. We can work together to determine the best way to achieve your goals in a warm, compassionate and non-judgmental environment.

Whether family, couples, or individual therapy, my first priority is to make you feel safe, supported, and seen in our therapeutic relationship.
Are you an immigrant or child of immigrants stuck in painful relationships over clashing expectations and feeling unseen? Are you the “high achiever” or “caretaker” but have to hide parts of yourself and can’t shake the underlying fear that something isn’t right? Are you curious about how intergenerational experiences influence your identities, decisions, and struggles? You may have sought relief from the conflict, anxiety, and shame but not in the healthiest ways. You may finally be considering therapy to stop avoiding, stop suffering, and start healing. You’ve come to the right place.

Moved by children I've worked with and the lack of SEP's specializing in kids, my colleague Terésa Stern and I started a family-oriented practice called Mindful Parenting Brooklyn.
One of my core values is to offer my complete presence to the other person. I believe presence is key to fostering a safe and secure environment so that mutual trust can unfold and transformative work can be done. Since 2010, I have focused my work on children and parents struggling with family life challenges including traumatic events such as divorce, loss, prenatal/birth trauma, medical procedures, adoption and attachment disruption. I am also trained in Sensory Motor Arousal Regulation Treatment (SMART), a modality that specifically helps children resolve trauma using play, movement, and sensory motor stimulation.

For most of us, anxiety and stress can inhibit our ability to be fully present. Sometimes, all it takes is a new perspective to find the clarity to create a new reality, build fulfilling relationships, and grow into the best version of yourself. I help women experiencing stress, anxiety, and self doubt to overcome life’s challenges and create healthy relationships. Navigating friendships, dating, and changing family dynamics can be a roller coaster in your 20s and 30s—a time where you might grow apart from old friends, experience roommate conflicts, explore intimacy for the first time, or get clear on what you want out of life.

Does no one gets how anxious, frustrated or checked out you feel? It's so hard to be misunderstood. Trauma, family pressure, relationship issues; these things can have you stuck in a cycle of unhappiness. These experiences may even have you anxious, depressed and seeking relief through using substances. You’ve tried everything you can to address issues on your own. You want someone to actually help you. Despite it being hard, you're willing to ask for help. I want you to know that you can feel more connected, whole, energized and fulfilled. I am dedicated to helping you, using somatic therapy to link the mind, body and spirit.

Issues of self-esteem, identity, intimate relationships, sexuality and gender, family, work, and peer interactions, as well as overwhelming emotional turmoil may form the basis of your therapy.
Life is a series of transitions. We often need help in moving from a place of discomfort to a place of calmness, safety, and satisfaction. The process of psychotherapy can help you get to that better place. I work with individuals, couples, and families with a focus on achieving self-understanding for the purpose of changing situations which are stressful and unpleasant. My practice is all inclusive, treating those seemingly well adjusted yet with nagging underlying dissatisfactions to those experiencing extreme distress, alienation, and shame.

I believe every dysfunction, every disorder, and every pain was somehow born to cope with life and protect the best parts of us. In the journey towards healing, we all need a power greater than ourselves (call it God, love, or family...) to provide acceptance, support, and a safe place to unravel. Counseling is an invitation to come and be; to take an honest look at yourself for who and what you really are; to realize your issues make sense; and to have compassion for all parts of you so you can holistically heal and function at your full potential.

I have over 8 years of experience providing short and long term psychotherapy to adults dealing with issues such as career stress, trauma, anxiety, depression, parenting and family issues, and unexpected injury and medical conditions.
As a therapist and coach, I offer a safe, supportive space for my clients to explore, grow awareness, and make decisions about the way they choose to approach and live their lives. People often reach out when they are at a crossroads with career or relationship issues, and they are experiencing emotions that feel overwhelming like anxiety or depression. I partner with my clients to provide empathetic, active listening as well as focus on skill development. Through our work together, clients develop a deeper understanding of themselves, where they came from, and the impact the past has on who they are in the present moment.

My approach is gently guiding you through the emotions and working with you to identify their source, often rooted in family-of-origin experiences.
Being vulnerable and having boundaries with your partner is cathartic. Always having a mask on or your walls up is exhausting. I can help you figure out the map to move past the patterns and behaviors that no longer serve your growth. By safely addressing and healing the disconnects in your relationship, you can open again to each other and to a fuller life to build a healthy, nurturing connection and a brighter future for yourself!

I am trained in DBT, CBT, Marriage and Family Therapy and SFT.
When a person decides to seek therapy, there are two very important factors to consider - The potential therapist's experience, and the feeling of connection with the therapist that is instrumental and essential to the healing process. The first thing I consider in working with a new client is how to best meet them where they are in their emotional journey, and then how to create a feeling of trust, safety and collaboration in a caring relationship to promote healing.

The decision to seek help for a problem is often a difficult one. People pursue therapy for a variety of reasons. Some may enter therapy to address major life changes, such as becoming a parent, and others may seek help in managing mental health conditions, like depression. Many people seek counseling because they have identified specific goals or issues that they wish to work on. Others may be encouraged by family, friends, or medical professionals to seek help. Whatever the motivation, it takes courage to attend therapy, and it takes dedication to see it through.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
