When a family is united there are no obstacles that can't be overcome.
You're feeling overwhelmed meeting the needs of your child during an intense outburst of frustration. The feelings of inadequacy and exhaustion are starting to take hold as each parenting skill you try to implement falls flat on its face. You keep asking yourself "what am I doing wrong," "why aren't they listening or following directions," or "how can I help my child be the person they are capable of becoming?" Parenting is a huge undertaking for anybody, but now you don't have to take the journey on your own. Para información en español presione el botón de arriba.

Understanding who you are or what you are feeling is difficult when you are not even sure what words to use to describe your experience or what questions to ask yourself. Naming that is a big step. You may put on a mask to navigate the world in order to reduce the pressures you feel from society. High expectations when you were younger may make mistakes seem unacceptable. The journey to explore who you are may seem lonely. You may notice similarities in the relationships you form now with the relationship you have with your family. The early traumas in your life may be triggering you now in ways that are frustrating and upsetting.

Despite what anybody else has ever said, you ARE worth the investment in your own wellbeing, and the wellbeing of your relationships and family.
Times are stressful to say the least. Identity questions, relationship challenges, loss, past trauma, and anxiety or depression can add to the difficulties in knowing how to cope and find a path forward. I believe in both personal and collective power to change. We can make individual changes and we can change systems. When it feels like you're struggling to hope or find optimism in your situation, I can hold that for you until the day you're able to. I can assist children and youth in learning themselves more deeply. I can support families, as well as couples and partners, through questions, stuck places, or crisis.

I work to establish a strong rapport and hear from the individual, couple, or family what their current strengths and challenges are to better understand the entire picture.
I really enjoy helping individuals who are at varying stages in their life. This allows me to be creative in the orientation, approach and interventions. My area of expertise is dual-diagnosis or co-occurring disorders. This is very common among people seeking help and allows for many avenues and paths toward a positive change.

In addition to the breathwork and somatic techniques, I incorporate modalities such as Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), mindfulness, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS).
Are you disconnected from your body? Maybe your body doesn't feel like a safe place. Trauma can disrupt one's relationship with the body and lead to detachment or hatred toward one's body. As a yoga instructor and therapist who specializes in trauma, I enjoy using gentle movement and connection to the breath to help trauma survivors to develop, or rebuild, a sense of safety within the body. I have found this approach can be instrumental in clients learning to tolerate sensory and emotional experiences and ultimately forming a compassionate relationship with their body.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
