Have you been struggling with anxiety, depression, unresolved trauma, or grief? Do you have difficulty saying "no" ? We can become stuck when trying to figure out how to maneuver through relationships, loss, and life transitions. We become sad, angry, jaded, and defeated. For the past 4 decades plus, I have specialized in LGBTQ issues. I currently focus on gender identity issues and assist my transgender clients with navigating their often challenging journeys. As an "out" cisgender lesbian practitioner, I strive to help my LGBTQ clients travel from a place of shame to pride. Much of our work centers on self- esteem and the ways in which homophobia and transphobia impact so many areas of our lives-including family, career, and our intimate relationships. I love animals and also do veterinary counseling and consulting. My style is interactive and casual. I highly value your confidentiality.

Are you going through a turbulent time, frustrated with yourself and life, struggling in a relationship, knowing you're not fully using your talents and intelligence? It could be adult ADHD is tripping you up in ways you don't realize. Or it could be other emotional, relational or family issues. I provide individual, couples, and family therapy to adults and teens.
Mental health and relationship issues are all too common and we each have our own unique way of experiencing them. Therapy is a place to realign this weight we carry and build a better relationship with our challenges. I provide a space for this exploration, one where you can get personal and vulnerable, laugh and cry, sometimes even curse and yell, and also informational and straight to the point. Together, we would do this by building trust and learning how our body-mind connection impacts our mental health.

My strengths include warmth, compassion and open-mindedness as part of a comprehensive, client-centered approach. My early training emphasized humanism and later training has included a variety of modalities, such as Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy and EMDR. I focus on fostering existing strengths of clients and tend to favor a more short-term approach. I also provide supportive counseling related to issues centered around family, relationships and career.

So many people go through constant life pressures such as family-related problems, challenges within inter-personal relationships, and marital issues compounded with unresolved past trauma. It is understandable that we initially seek relief but ultimately, we need clarity of mind and freedom from suffering. Everyone's journey is different; and every single person needs to be seen and heard. That's why I do what I do as a therapist - to be there for you.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
