Life today is complicated & has so many new stressors (political polarization, climate change, social media, gambling, family, work) many people are feeling anxious in ways they never have before.
As a therapist, I partner with the person I am working with and we collaboratively explore options that may fit your needs and bring you where you want to be, and how you want to be in your life. I am available for TeleHealth Sessions throughout Colorado. If you are wanting to tackle issues such as Addiction, Codependency, Trauma, Sexuality, Unmanageable Stress and Anxiety, Gambling, ADD/ADHD, Feeling Intimidated by a Life Transition ("What is next?") or Feeling Stuck and wanting to make Personal or Career Changes we may want to meet. I use Brainspotting, talk therapies, and a variety of other treatment methods like CBT, MI, & DBT.

When you have suffered trauma, you learn early on that you can not say "no". As a result, maybe you struggle with people pleasing, saying "yes" to whatever comes up to avoid conflict, and hopefully, demonstrate your value. Maybe you feel like you can't trust yourself, can't trust others, and are destined to live a life of powerlessness and shame. When was the last time you remember having good sleep? The last you felt good enough? Safe? Whole? Or maybe you are concerned about ailing relationships in your life; be they with family, friends, or your partner? Maybe you want to feel closer to others but don't know how? We can help.

In addition, I worked in medical education for 20 years teaching clinical skills to psychiatric residents in various therapeutic modalities and Behavioral Medicine to family medicine residents.
Sometimes life confronts us with experiences that are disruptive personally or in our relationships resulting in feelings of depression, anxiety, or loss. While these feelings are normal, they can present challenges in terms of maintaining our sense of well-being and our ability to function well in our daily lives. In my view, the purpose of therapy is to help clients understand the source of disruptions, help them learn strategies for coping with and working-through difficult emotions, and become aware of triggering experiences. In this way, clients can learn how to repair disruptions and thereby restore their sense of well-being.

Other specialities include understanding dysfunctional family dynamics including substance abuse or untreated mental illness.
I utilize my 17 years of counseling experience working with diverse populations from school age to adult to help clients understand themselves better and make meaningful changes. My areas of specialty include anxiety, depression, ADHD/ASD, and life, school and career related transitions. Previously, I counseled college students in the university setting. I enjoy working with young adults as that is an immense time of transition, new beginnings and many times added stressors. This is a season of life where students can learn a lot about themselves and build healthy habits and positive coping skills for a lifetime.

I borrow from several theoretical approaches and modalities: psychodynamic, insight-oriented art therapy, EMDR, DBT, CBT, mindfulness-based, positive psychology and structural and family systems theories.
Integrating art therapy, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and talk therapy, I offer a unique treatment approach for adults, children, teens, and families. In my 27 years of practice, I have extensive experience working with trauma, abuse, sexual assault, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, grief/loss, and interpersonal difficulties. My approach is supportive, collaborative and strength-based. I find fulfillment in helping individuals experience empowerment, increase resilience and make life changes that are sustainable and rewarding. My office is located downtown Bloomington in the historic Faris Building.

This practice is built to support individuals, guardians, and family members who are needing to find a new way forward.
Are your relationships becoming difficult to manage? Are you torn between helping others and helping too much? Do you feel defeated by substance use, or untreated mental illness of someone you care about? You are not alone. Together, we can develop effective strategies to reverse unhealthy habits and attitudes that contribute to anxiety, depression, poor decision-making, feelings of loss, and hopelessness. Putting yourself first doesn't mean you don't care about others. Self-care is not selfish. It is a way to restore balance. You deserve the opportunity to define for yourself a life of meaning and success.

I wanted to get into the mental health field from a young age, as I was always surrounded by friends and family who struggled with mental health.
I am a Licensed Social Worker with a passion for decreasing the stigma surrounding mental health and promoting the health and well being of my clients. For my undergraduate degree, I moved from Central Jersey (Yes! It exists!) to South Jersey to attend Stockton University. I received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work with a Minor in Behavioral Neuroscience from Stockton, and then moved on to attend graduate school in Philadelphia. I received my Master of Social Work Degree with a clinical concentration from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Social Policy and Practice in May of 2020.

From an early age relationship shapes us, and the throws of life trigger wellsprings of emotion that make communication difficult. Emotionally laden issues take on a life of their own and the negative cycle can feel exhausting and unending. Long term stress and anxiety strain relationships and taxes the mind, body, and spirit. As a marriage and family therapist and nearly a doctorate in traumatology, I enjoy processing the complexities of relationship and mental wellbeing to discover longstanding patterns and issues that thwart intimacy and affection. Whether it be individual, marriage or family therapy, I can help.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
