Ever so often, we reach crossroads in our lives that require support in deciding which path to take. Sometimes we simply need a sounding board to allow us to sort things that are confusing. Other times, we have a good idea regarding what we wish to accomplish yet we need a platform to develop a plan of action in order to improve our quality of life. We may be grieving or bound by emotional trauma that plagues us. We may have family conflicts, relationship issues, parenting challenges or simply seek a better understanding of who we are and what motivates us.

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who has 20 years of experience specializing in child and adolescent therapy. I am very passionate about my work, it is such a significant part of who I am. My philosophy is to use a positive approach to counseling, building upon the strengths of both the client as well as the family. Although my career started working with younger children, over the years I expanded my practice to include adolescents, and now adolescent therapy has become my primary specialty! I also work with older children and young adults!

I have experience providing group, individual, and family therapies to culturally diverse and high-risk populations, including children/families involved with DCF, and youth/families involved with the Department of Juvenile Justice.
When life feels stressful or overwhelming, it’s okay to ask for help. As an LMHC, I team up with clients to help them determine what changes they’d like to make in their lives and the most effective ways to achieve them. We all need support at times, whether it be working through some past/current life-changing events, making big decisions, improving family or intimate partner relationships, or learning new skills to change things in your life. My background includes utilizing evidence-based approaches to assist those struggling with trauma, mood disorders, social skills deficits, and oppositional behavior & sexual behavior issues.

I am experienced in Individual, Couple, and Family Therapy.
Emotional Healing begins with you. You must make the choice to face your fears. Fear is crippling and results in being "stuck"emotionally. The road to recovery starts with personal discovery. My experience includes over 40 years in the field of Mental Health. I worked 8 years at a private psychiatric inpatient facility with adolescents, adults, and geriatric populations. I worked 30 years at a VA Medical Center with Veterans dealing with Addictions, Relationship conflict, Behavioral problems, Adjustment Disorders, Depression, and PTSD.

I look forward to helping you and your family work through the struggles you are facing.
Everyone is dealing with stress, feelings if emotional discomfort, and general struggle. Unfortunately, not everyone has a safe place or person to help them process these thoughts and feelings in a way that you can get relief. There is nothing worse than being in the trenches of life and having no one there to remind you that there is a light and help you find it. No matter your age, gender, or current life situation, everyone needs the opportunity and the space to unpack those uncomfortable feelings and get them out. You are important and you deserve the time.

My approach is Attachment- and Mindfulness-Based and I am trained with the IFS Institute to apply the Internal Family Systems model.
You are having a hard time feeling connected to yourself and your loved ones, have difficulty managing the different aspects of your life and are experiencing a hard time coping with past events. You seem to have trouble recognizing who you are today, feel like your emotions are overwhelming and are missing a sense of peace. One thing is for sure: you’re ready for some relief. You’re ready to find the clarity and confidence in your decision making and move through life with more ease. Most of all, you’re ready to find joy in the day-to-day again. You’re ready for a new “normal”, and I can help you get there.

Warmth, collaboration, and a focused, interactive style are among the most important qualities to look for in a psychotherapist, and these are what I strive to offer. Providing counseling since 1986, I believe that thoroughness, expertise, and clinical competence go together with kindness, respect and approachability. Over the years I have gained diverse experience working with depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, couples and family issues, life transitions, stress management, women's issues, parenting and many more areas. Change for the better is possible, even in the most trying of circumstances. I work toward achieving this with every client I see.

Whether it is behavioral difficulties, school issues, family conflict, dating, identity, social skills, anxiety, or depression, we will work together to make a plan for your child/teen to live a more fulfilled life.
If you've noticed that your child/teen isn’t as happy or social as they used to be, they’ve started making risky choices with friends, they’ve become more irritable, or recently experienced a big transition, then therapy may be a good fit. Parents often come to me with worries that their family has become disconnected, their teen struggles with low self-esteem due to social media comparisons, or their child struggles with academic pressures. I work primarily with elementary through high school ages and all of the ups and downs that occur in between by providing individual and family therapy.

It is my experience that an empathic approach that is strength-based and grounded in science provides the most optimal therapeutic outcomes. While the foundations of my therapeutic approach are behavioral and cognitive- behavioral, I view compassion as an integral component to the way in which I practice. I believe that growth and change are fostered in environments in which individuals are seen and heard and differences are honored. It is therefore my primary mission to provide a safe and supportive environment for each individual and family member that I work with.

Please note: Contacting Dr. Walsh does not establish a therapist-patient relationship. If this is an emergency, call 911 or go to the emergency room.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
