Time is spent discussing your problems in the here-and-now, with reference to your background and your childhood only when relevant. Together we target self-defeating behaviors and thinking, rather than focusing on psychopathology. Dr. Hurd provides answers in terms you can understand, helping you find solutions to problems in the here-and-now, with a special emphasis on discovering alternatives to the "victim mentality" of blaming everything on your family, "society" or your biological make-up.

Thank you for visiting my profile. I am licensed in Delaware and have over 30 years experience working in the public school system as a special educator and school counselor at the elementary level. Although most of my experience is with children, their parents and families, I enjoy working with individuals of all ages and couples.

Whether it’s brief, solutions-based counseling, or longer ongoing deeper therapy, our sessions are about you and your needs. Along with our sessions together, I love to offer clients educational ideas to empower them to learn, heal, and grow at their comfortable pace. My relaxed demeanor and experience working as a former lead group educator in an acute dual-diagnosis psychiatric hospital has allowed me to work with diverse populations and their important goals with great care.

I am a National Board Certified Counselor. I have worked with people in a variety of settings for over 40 years. My background includes being the Director of Counseling at a well known college, hospital social work, and with individuals in long term rehabilitation. I have been an adjunct instructor of Social Work, Psychology and Sociology. I stress confidentiality in my practice and want my clients to be comfortable knowing their privacy is acknowledged and protected. I currently specialize in Grief Counseling, Depression and Anxiety and issues in the LGBTQ+ community. My practice is out of my home which insures privacy.

I strive to help adults and older adults achieve balance through therapy. I am licensed in Maryland, Delaware, DC and Virginia and I have been a Medicare provider since 2009. Through my experience in working with adults and older adults, I am aware of the unique challenges that they encounter during these stages of life. In my practice, I focus on one's strengths and I help clients to recognize their own distinct set of coping skills to live the good quality of life that they deserve to live. I provide Telehealth via Zoom to allow clients the ability to receive support in the comfort and safety of their own homes.

I am a Licensed Therapist in Delaware and Maryland with over 25 years of experience. Providing counseling for children, teens, adults, and families dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief/loss, ADHD, and other life issues. I also have many years of experience helping individual and families who are dealing with terminal illness and end of life transitions.

Change can be difficult. Especially when you have experienced mental or emotional suffering for months or years. Believing that things can change can be even more difficult, however, change is possible. With counseling, faith, and using your own personal strengths, all things are possible, even experiencing peace. Sometimes experiencing peace may mean that the situation has not gone away or even changed much but the way you think, react, cope, or respond to the situation no longer brings you turmoil. Change can begin in you and with you when you allow us to work together to bring a healing process to your life right now.

Therapy can be an excellent tool to help calm the chaos, and take stock of what is truly important in our lives, and allow ourselves the time to focus on changing our mindset, relational patterns, or life trajectory. It is my desire to help those who are hurting to make significant changes for themselves to better their mood, self-esteem and their relationships with others, both adults and children. Oftentimes life can become too overwhelming and stressful, and we may need some time and assistance to assess our situation, and find new ways to calm and cope.

My practice is currently full and I am not accepting new patients. I work with individuals and couples ages 18 and older. I provide a comfortable and safe environment for my patients to explore their feelings, thoughts and relationships. Through therapy sessions my patients can reduce their symptoms of anxiety & depression, improve their family and work relationships and feel more confident about themselves. I help my patients figure out where they are now, and where they want to be in the future.

I’m passionate about helping individuals reach their maximum potential. There are many life stressors and situations that can present challenges. I’m humbled and honored to be gifted the opportunity to walk alongside you as you work towards healing and recovery through various life transitions. My specialty is working with individuals and families of individuals who struggle with addiction. I also work with individuals who struggle with anxiety, depression, trauma, ptsd, poor self image, and those who need guidance in setting healthy boundaries.

Your commitment to this process is vital. Shame, guilt, regrets, denial, fear, resentment, blame and repression are barriers that prevent so many of us from moving forward to a healthier life.
