Addictions are often considered a “family disease” not only because they can be traced back through generations, but also because, on a more observable level, every member of the immediate family plus friends and acquaintances are affected.
After working with adults for over twenty-five years in the fields of addictions and therapy, I’ve learned that you and I are a lot alike: we want to feel good and not feel pain; we want to be able to breathe easier and not feel troubled. Our work will involve exploring habitual patterns and looking at obstacles that have obscured the answers to your questions; we will work patiently, diligently, creatively and with humor to become more aware of them. We will work to mindfully loosen the grip of those obstacles, bit by bit, while exploring alternatives and options.

I work with children struggling to adjust to changes such as divorce, family blending, or grieving a loss; experiencing mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and trauma; and children struggling with behavior, school, or relationship problems.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and play therapist specializing in working with elementary, middle, and high school age children. As a child therapist I utilize play therapy, expressive art, and sandtray therapy modalities, providing children with developmentally appropriate opportunities to self-direct and “play out” their feelings and inner worlds much as adults “talk out” their feelings in traditional talk therapy. My counseling approach is child-centered, relationship-focused, and strengths-based.

1) attachment strengthens while the family discover new meanings of the past.
Empowering parent's and caregiver's ability to connect with their child in a deep and meaningful way is the central focus of Spencer’s approach to overcoming challenges. This begins when parents/caregivers are able to resolve any challenges in the relationship that may be a barrier to therapy. Once this occurs, caregivers and their child can begin, in a safe and therapeutic environment, to explore the trauma, abuse, neglect, abandonment and loss which are the emotional source to behavioral struggles.

I find that working with the parents of my clients forms a therapeutic alliance for the family who are seeking that extra level of support I would love to meet your child to see if we would be a good fit on this therapeutic journey! Call me or email me to set-up your free phone consultation.
My belief is that when you build a strong alliance with your therapist, you create a really positive experience for the therapeutic process. I strive to create a safe positive place for adolescents to share their thoughts and feelings and learn new ways to work with conflict and setbacks they might be facing right now. Adolescents are having a hard time with all of the social distancing requirements and remote learning this often leads to anxiety, depression, and substance use. which then results in not completing school work. This is a hard time for families and it truly does affect the whole family.

Many of us don’t grow up in environments where it’s okay to have or express a range of feelings. That can lead to problems later in life when you need to understand and process what you’re experiencing. You may find yourself struggling with anxiety, anger management, relationships, and family conflicts. For men in particular, that could lead to sexually addictive behaviors and related issues. While it might seem you’re alone in this, roughly 10% of men say they struggle with pornography use. I specialize in helping those in the military, veterans, first responders and others deal with these and related challenges.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
