Beyond general personal growth counseling, I also specialize in assisting individuals whose lives have been, to varying degrees, dismantled by non-life-threatening physical health issues. Symptoms and what we tell ourselves can disrupt the flow of home, relationship, and work life. Lives can shrink to ways of being in the world that are unfamiliar, scary, and unsettling – leading us to wonder who we’ve become, what our futures hold, etc. Family members, friends, and health care providers can assist us, though may lack the experience/knowledge necessary to help map out and lead us through the intricacies of the journey.

My training and practice is based in family systems, narrative and cognitive-behavioral theories.
I am a licensed clinical social worker specializing in working with children, adolescents, and adults. After graduating with a Masters in Social Work from the University of Michigan in 2003, I have provided both home based and outpatient therapy to at risk youth and families. I specialize in working with children, adolescents and adults dealing with a wide range of issues. I believe that small shifts at any level, i.e. personal, environmental, or within relationships, can affect positive change within any individual and system.

My approach to therapy is that one size does not fit all, and as of 2020, the psychological, philosophical, moral, and emotional blocks and barriers to living are realer than ever. My approach is a non-nonjudgemental, nondiagnostic in nature, although you might have DSM disorder I am not counseling your diagnosis but working with you as a human being. The issues of therapy have to do with you and your feelings and thoughts about how are you doing inside, how do you balance in a crisis like now. What is it your dreaming or afraid of? Can we explore all the ways to manage your world regardless of the conflicts in the outer world?

***NOT ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS*** I work with adults and couples from diverse backgrounds. Using a collaborative, relational approach I help you with your struggles with anxiety, grief, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, multicultural identity concerns, and life transitions. The foundation of my approach focuses on developing a shared understanding of your current struggles and how personal, relational, familial, and cultural experiences help shape your unique life circumstances. Trauma, stress, and anxiety harm us. In response we disconnect from our partners, families, and communities. Our future and our identity are stolen from us. A joyful life filled with hope and meaning can feel out of reach. This is especially true for people in the helping professions - physicians, nurses, counselors, mental health workers, teachers and others - where rapidly increasing expectations and demands from the job often outpace our resilience and ability to effectively cope and change.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
