As a multicultural therapist, I help individuals and couples recognize how institutions of power, environment, family dynamics and personal histories influence and shape identity, values and decision making. My approach supports clients to identify and challenge narratives negatively impacting their life, to uncover their path for transformation. I work with individuals and couples of all identities and relationship types, who are wanting a change and a desire to deepen their understanding of one another, work through trauma, explore setbacks in their relationships, and build a safe space for liberation, empowerment, and connection.

Marriage and Family therapist trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy.
I work with adults and couples who want to better understand themselves as they work through challenges. I gather information and help generate ideas that support autonomy and healthy relationships. I support clients as they find strength in a challenging world, adjust to life transitions, and manage difficulties such as families, illness, grief, depression, and anxiety. Using EMDR therapy I can assist clients in processing and healing from personal trauma(s). I see therapy as an active and collaborative process. I am here to listen and to help you navigate a desired change.

I'm a mindfulness-based psychotherapist who has studied Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Nutrition, spiritual psychology, Family Systems, life coaching, Eye-movement Desensitization & Reprocessing, and I regularly combine all of these approaches to promote comprehensive healing for the individual.
My clients are multi-dimensional people - with physical, psychological and spiritual needs - who are doing the best they can to have a gratifying and meaningful life. My role as a therapist is to assist each person to expand their awareness of self and interactions with others, and to identify and change unsatisfying patterns and behaviors. Partners: When couples first start counseling, they often have a lot of anger, hurt, and sadness. Couples therapy is designed to find solutions to problems, express and let go of resentments, rebuild trust through good communication, and learn to live with different points of view.

In my 40 years as a psychologist my goal has been to provide the safe nurturing environment that creates a productive client/therapist relationship. I have never forgotten my early experiences in seeking help from a therapist, wondering what it would be like, and if it would really help. I appreciated the understanding and insight I received then, and throughout my life, sometimes with my husband, I have found different kinds of therapy that were helpful to me and to my clients.

I enjoy working with individuals who are motivated to become the best version of themselves. I want to walk alongside you and assist you in your own personal development. I believe that my role is to assist in facilitating your healing journey, provide feedback and encouragement, and allow for educational opportunities; however, you're doing the actual work of changing behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. I provide services outside of my full-time job and only see clients during the evenings, weekends, and holidays. I will get to know you as an individual and we will work from there!

Common presenting issues include mood disruptions such as depression/anxiety; relational concerns such as partnership struggles and social isolation; abuse/neglect and trauma, especially within family of origin; losses and life transitions; and identity questions, in such areas as vocation, sexuality, and gender.
Entering into therapy is a courageous decision to seek life in response to whatever concerns and challenges have gotten your attention. Everyone bears experiences that have had an alienating and destructive impact on their relationship with others and with themselves. Without the support of another to work through these experiences and use them for our growth, these destructive effects often compound over time as we cope and try to heal on our own. Counseling is an opportunity to receive the kind of support that can enable you to find not only relief, but the goodness you have struggled to access in yourself and your relationships.

You might ask, “why talk with a therapist about these things?” Well for some of us we believe we do not want to be a burden to our family or friends.
Maybe you have an unexplained fear or sadness and you do not know why? Maybe you do know why, but that hasn’t helped you. Maybe you feel stressed and overwhelmed in your relationship(s) (wife, husband, partner, son, daughter, friend, or coworker). Maybe someone you loved has broken it off with you. Maybe someone dear to you has died. Maybe someone has hurt you. I know I have had such experiences. They are part of life. What you, I, or anyone else must do is to be able to live with it in spite of our hardships. This is where I come in. You do not have to go through hardship alone. We were never meant to.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
