I enjoy clients from a variety of walks of life. The common denominator is wanting change in their lives and or change in how they treat themselves or think about themselves. They are also tired of being disrespected by others including family members and co-workers and they want guidance for stopping this.

I have experience providing parenting skills training; family and couple's therapy; trauma and attachment therapy; and individual therapy.
I am here to help you be the best version of yourself. I am a mere conduit through which you can travel to wellness, a mirror to reflect back what you project to the world, and a tool to help you work on those neglected issues that you have ignored for too long.

As a therapist, my biggest goal is to help you to be kinder to yourself and to live a more easeful life. I've found that EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) are a really effective combination of therapies for people struggling with trauma, anxiety, life transitions, and relationship difficulties (and work well virtually!). These approaches may be new to you, but what's important to know for now is that they provide the tools to help heal trauma, increase self-compassion, improve relationships, manage anxiety, and build a healthier and happier life.

I have experience in helping clients with relationship issues, trauma and abuse, & motivation, self-esteem, and confidence, anxiety, adjustment issues, college and career readiness, couples, depression, family dynamics, gender identity, identity development, LGBT+, non-traditional relationships, men's issues.
I am a licensed professional counselor in Virginia with 12 years of professional work experience. When I work with clients, listening to understand instead of hearing to respond is a priority. I believe it is imperative that I develop a sound understanding of my client's subjective worldview to meet them where they are and disrupt maladaptive thoughts and patterns of behavior. My objective is to collaborate with my clients in order to help them identify, address, and resolve matters that reinforce and/or contribute to their presenting concern(s).

I opened In Step, a private mental health practice, 25 years ago in the hope that children, teens, parents, and adults would see us as a safe place where they can learn and grow. I specialize in working with folks who struggle with anxiety, depression, ADHD, parenting struggles, and relationship problems. Using various approaches – Relational Psychotherapy, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, CBT (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy), and Parent Coaching, I see clients alone, as part of a couple, and as part of the family.

Life is complex. There are times when anxiety, depression, trauma, personal issues (relationships, family, career), and substances are experienced. And there are times where joy and excitement are experienced. You need a safe, nonjudgmental, and trusting space to talk about your experience, feel validated and heard, explore solutions, and press forward in your success. My therapeutic style is laid-back, warmth, empathic, compassionate, strength oriented, and lastly using humor to therapeutically laugh during times when it is appropriate. I will meet you where you’re at in your journey!

Being a human can be hard. We are given tools early in life to navigate this world and sometimes we get it right and other times we struggle for one reason or another. Sometimes milestones such as marriage, children, graduation and other life changes unearth unresolved trauma or repressed emotions. We do our best to recover from anxiety, depression, trauma and other stressors but sometimes we need outside support that goes beyond what friends, family and loved ones can provide.

I am offering telehealth services only. The purpose of therapy, as opposed to just talking with a friend or family member, is to facilitate personal and professional growth. This growth is typically most needed in the areas of relationships, mood, performance and an overall improved integration of one's identity and values. In order to make growth possible, one must feel safe in an objective, confidential environment. My primary goal is to offer a safe and supportive place for change. Throughout the entire process, I will encourage, guide, challenge and support you in making the changes you deem to be right for you.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
