As a clinician, I draw upon modalities based in Internal Family Systems (IFS), Attachment Theory, EMDR, and Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) to help those I work with achieve their goals.
I specialize in working with children, adolescents, young adults, and families who are looking for help around challenges with ADHD, neurodivergence, anxiety, depression, behavioral difficulties, and those that are twice exceptional. I view my role as helping individuals discover their capabilities and strengths to overcome life challenges. Many times, this means helping them identify new coping strategies, ways to communicate with others, and an overall healthier way of living.

Are you struggling with sexually problematic behavior? Do you think you may be addicted to pornography? Has your spouse betrayed trust by crossing emotional boundaries with someone else? There is hope. It is possible to recover from compulsive or addictive behaviors and to have marriage and family relationships restored. Many who have been negatively impacted by sexual compulsivity share feelings of anger, hurt, shame, and helplessness. I've successfully helped individuals, couples, and families heal from sex and porn addiction by providing a safe, non-judgmental, confidential setting to help learn tools to grow beyond the grip of destructive choices.

You work so hard to do what’s right. Always trying to live up to expectations from society, your family, and yourself for what a man is supposed to be. But no matter how tirelessly you toil or how much energy you expend, it never seems to make any difference. You’re still stuck in the same place – unfulfilled, disconnected, and increasingly frustrated at your inability to fix anything. It feels like you’re slowly being crushed under the weight of your responsibilities to everyone. You want so badly to break free of this terrible cycle, but that seems impossible. You need help, but you’re unsure where to turn. It feels hopeless.

My time as a therapist has predominantly focused on children/teens with clinical issues ranging from severe depression, anger, mood disorders, and those struggling with transitions whether from behavioral issues at school or issues stemming from from changes in their family. It is my belief that therapy should be a collaborative effort between the therapist, family, and child focusing on establishing their own goals for treatment with clinical guidance. I have found that offering a supportive and understanding environment can help both clients and their family a way of addressing their needs even if they feel insurmountable.

Relational conflicts, personal meaningfulness, and family/systemic traumas are some of my areas of focus.
The most profound force is a person’s ability to heal. Life can deal its chaos and turmoil to anyone, but I believe that we are all on our own path toward wholeness. When we lose ourselves for a time, problems such as anxiety, depression, or addiction may arise. My priorities as a therapist are to be a collaborator and guide to nurture the growth and healing that is already occurring in you. I strive to bring a relational style to the therapeutic process knowing that it is sacred–yet potentially painful and intimidating–to ‘bear one’s soul’ to another. I am LGBTQ+ affirming and seek to create a warm and welcoming space for all.

We live in challenging times that can lead to a variety of individual and relational problems such as anxiety, depression, anger, and marital/family discord. Helping individuals, couples, and families to address and resolve such problems has been the focus of my clinical work and research over the years. Earlier in my career I specialized in work in the area of anger and aggression management, and I continue to have a strong interest in that work. As a Naval Special Warfare (UDT/SEAL) veteran, I am also interested in addressing the special needs of military service members, veterans, and their families.

I have been assisting people to overcome depression, anxiety and to repair relationships seemingly in free-fall for more than 40 years. Because there is no shortcut to peace and well-being, treatment is open-ended, tailored to each person's unique needs. Teletherapy by computer, tablet, and smartphone is available for individual, couple, and group treatment sessions. With COVID-19, Shelter-in-Place puts even more stress on relationships and employment. Alcohol, drug use, and porn addiction can make relationships even harder. I have much experience assisting addicts to achieve a more peaceful and productive life for self and family.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
