*ONLINE COUNSELING ANYWHERE IN VIRGINIA* Do you feel unsettled or that you're not where you want to be in life? Maybe you’re wondering if you’ll ever be a “good enough” partner, wife, mother, friend, or just good enough, in general. Or you’re faced with an important life decision like marriage, a new job, or whether or not to have a baby. You can’t really put your finger on why these decisions are so hard for you and that keeps you stuck and feeling anxious all the time. You have a hard time trusting your gut or listening to that quiet voice inside you that’s telling you something’s not right.

We will explore establishing appropriate boundaries, setting limits & modeling for a healthier family life.
Our goal in therapy is to help you improve coping skills. We will help you identify current and past stressors. We will learn to talk about feelings rather than internalizing feelings, thereby, decreasing your risk of becoming sick. Verbalizing your goals can prevent you from “acting out” our feelings; “What We Say & What We Do Will Match Up.” We live in a stressful, fast paced, changing world with constant losses daily; no wonder we all feel anxious. Psychotherapy can lead to a deeper understanding of ourselves & others. Being conscious of patterns in our lives can be one of the first steps towards change.

I like helping folks develop these skills to manage stressors such as addiction, relationships, codependence, family illness, trauma, grief and divorce.
Now accepting new patients for in-person and/or telehealth visits! Change and stressful life events can be overwhelming and scary and we often feel alone. I believe we all need help and support sometimes, and I would be honored to join you on your journey. I enjoy helping people identify their strengths and supportively guide them forward, making a plan to grow from life’s difficulties. Making a connection to the right supports can make all the difference when we face life’s challenges and I’m here to help.

My training began with understanding family emotional systems.
Typically, I work with clients ranging in age from 12 through adulthood. Many of my clients are facing challenges with depression, anxiety, job or school performance, relationship issues (couples, parenting, family of origin, and work). Often people come to a juncture in their lives when they know something must change. My work focuses on the desired change each person brings. Together we address reducing symptoms, removing obstacles to growth and increasing life satisfaction. Techniques including NLP, non-verbal presence, mindfulness are offered. Executive coaching, leadership and team building, masterful communication, and conflict mediation skills are offered to organizations.

My specialties include trauma, anxiety, adjusting to new situations (family changes, jobs, moving, etc), OCD, and having depressive symptoms.
Therapy does not have to be scary or overwhelming; sometimes a little humor can help. I practice Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and am a solution-focused therapist. I work with teenagers and adults and my goal is to work towards people not needing to see a therapist and being able to have skills to cope on their own. I collaborate with clients to figure out treatment goals to know what their individual therapy entails. Also, I provide a supportive environment where people can be themselves and know they will be understood. I am very supportive of diverse clientele and love learning about new people.

I am trained in a variety of treatment methods: EMDR (Eye Movement, Desensitization and Reprocessing), IFS (Internal Family Systems), AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy), PE for PTSD (Prolonged Exposure) and Somatic Body Work.
The attempt to ignore or suppress emotions, the pressure to "get over it", is where feelings of anxiety, depression, anger and loneliness thrive. I believe in the intelligence of our internal emotional system, viewing symptoms not as a problem to be solved but a roadmap to follow towards feeling and functioning better. The process of therapy will connect you with the internal resources needed to navigate life from a calmer and more connected space.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
