Immediate in person or telehealth available. Teenagers, Couples, Adults, TraumaWhen you feel you can’t achieve anything, your first reaction is to stay away from people. Then it becomes worse, goals you had before become impossible and the idea of loved ones could do better without you start to surface. Your mind tells you that the situation is hopeless and you are worthless. You drift to past experiences where you cringe physically and are filled with regret. Life becomes extremely boring due to you letting your fear control your life. Meeting new people and having new experiences doesn’t happen. You think you’re better off alone.

I've enjoyed years of counseling- with adolescents in an alternative high school, in inpatient rehab for substance use, with adults in hospitals (trauma unit, women's unit, and abortion clinic), and with parents and children in the family court system.
Have you found yourself overwhelmed lately? Given our social climate, you are in good company! Perhaps you're navigating relationship difficulties, a big life change, past trauma, or a significant loss. Feelings of anxiety and depression can drain our energies and become isolating. Trusted support is critical! I'd love to offer a safe space to process the heavy issues and uncover new ways forward. I'm happy to meet my clients where they are in life, without judgment. I work from a trauma-informed and strengths-based background, using training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and EFT.

By attending to your relationship dynamics, family messages, and your identity and relationship goals, we will help you access your power and find a sense of safety and calmness.
Are you ready to be more vulnerable but aren’t sure where to start? Have you found yourself struggling to share honestly with those around you? Or maybe you’ve tried sharing more of yourself with others, but you aren’t sure where you belong or if others will accept you? Our families can have a big impact on how we show up in our adult relationships. Cultural messages often impact how safe we feel to be fully ourselves. Shame and guilt can hold us back from experiencing intimacy and connection with ourselves and others. Together we will help you heal from any past wounds so you can feel more aligned in the present.

Are you overwhelmed? Do you feel lonely and isolated from friends and family? Do past traumatic events impact your ability to live in the present? Were you told as a child to "toughen up" and that your feelings and struggles would go away? Do you feel embarrassed to get mental health help? Depression, anxiety, and trauma do not disappear with age. If you have lost family, friends, professional identity, or other parts of your support system over the years, coping can become increasingly difficult. Therapy can help you build motivation, balance, and clarity in your life. Your past does not have to dictate your future.

Welcome. My name is Samatha and I specialize in areas often related to interpersonal trauma such as post-traumatic stress, anxiety, depression, grief, relationship problems, and issues of social inequity. Interpersonal trauma can include anything from childhood trauma that occurs in the family of origin, to ongoing discrimination in everyday life. Often times, trauma interferes with our ability to trust others and the world around us. This makes it very difficult to feel safe and secure in our own skin. It can be challenging to engage in the present moment and feel fulfilled, and it can compromise our health in many ways.

I have worked in various settings and issues of practice include sexual identity, relationship concerns, divorce, blended family adjustments, victims of domestic violence or sexual assault, as well as survivors of childhood trauma (physical, emotional or sexual abuse).
Carl Rogers once said, "When a person realizes he has been deeply heard, his eyes moisten. I think in some real sense he is weeping for joy. It is as though he were saying, "Thank God, somebody heard me. Someone knows what it's like to be me." We all experience times in our lives where we just need to be heard, to be validated, to find some direction. It is my belief that a therapeutic relationship with a genuine therapist who provides an authentic, nonjudgmental, safe environment is the most important factor for growth and positive outcomes.

Making the choice to attend to personal or relational healing is an act of courage. The courage to show up. The courage to be seen in all the beautiful, difficult and complex parts of being human. As a fellow traveler on the road to growth, we all need help along the way. The stigma of counseling is, thankfully, moving aside and making way for us to create purposeful living as well as strong, secure relational bonds that have far reaching benefits for couples and families. I have a collaborative and humanistic approach to co-creating an environment where you feel safe, seen and honored.

Perhaps you’re at a point where you are frustrated and tired of starting over with a new therapist. You’re tired of telling your story over and over again and not experiencing any relief. You’re tired of taking all these medications and being numb. And you’re tired of your past trauma disrupting your everyday life. Perhaps you’re wondering if you’re ever going to heal and feel better. You CAN heal. The therapist’s job is to help facilitate the healing process that lies within you. To heal from trauma, you don’t have to talk about the details of what has happened to you (unless you find it helpful).

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
