You do not need the cooperation of others to make improvements in your marriage or family, so it is useful to come alone.
Life has a tendency to throw unexpected situations, problems, and experiences at us. During these times, it is wise to seek guidance for our personal lives, marriages, families, and professional situations. Together, we will examine your current life situation, what is achievable, and how to move forward. Characteristics of narcissism, controlling behaviors, and problematic situations can affect one's mental health significantly. I work both with the person who struggles with these problems as well as those who are in relationships with that person. I work with individuals, couples, and families.

Welcome! My name is Amber Semidey, LCSW and my practice is called Discover You Therapy, PLLC. I provide individual psychotherapy services to Texas adults via virtual sessions. It's not an easy thing to realize you need help. We tell ourselves to "be strong" and "figure it out". What happens though when this is no longer effective? Sometimes, we need outside intervention because life gets chaotic, complex and confusing. When this happens, it's not only ok but completely normal as this is a part of the human experience. After all, we aren't robots!

Change can be difficult for people but wanting to feel better is a start. I believe that change is possible and that people can adjust and live up to their fullest potential. As a licensed professional counselor-supervisor (LPC-S), I believe that providing a non-judgmental, supportive environment for clients to fully express and explore their feelings, thoughts, and struggles is essential. Typically, I use a range of counseling approaches, including trying new coping skills, such as emotion regulation, to identifying and processing your thoughts to see how they may affect your feelings to exploring acceptance and how that may fit into your life.

Have you looked in the mirror and asked yourself, "How did I get here?" “Who can I trust?” “How did my life change so quickly that I can't even recognize myself anymore?" "Am I Crazy?" "I Want to be Happy?" Problems are just the tip of the iceberg. Real problems start and end with the mirror image we see daily. Often the mirror image is silent but dying to speak and live life again. Issues in life start with the inability to be heard, believed in, and understood. I believe the best way to find you again, is to find your voice.

A person is a person, no matter how small.- Dr. Seuss Speaking your truth is difficult when your first language is play, or you find it difficult to share your thoughts because of anxiety, grief or depression. Children struggle with a myriad of concerns in our technologically-driven age, whereby, their first impressions stem from influences seen on television, social media, and experiences from within their home or school environments. Moreover, adjusting to life-changing events is hard for children who need to feel supported on their journey through life.

I tailor treatment to the needs of each individual/family and advocate that the relationship is the most important aspect of the therapeutic process.
You are not alone. In a society of unattainable standards it can appear that everyone has it together. From relationships to careers, parenting or happiness, we can be illusioned to others living a blissfully smooth life without fear, sadness or conflict. At some point in our lives, each of us may feel anxious, isolated, depressed or lonely and need help dealing with life's challenges. You are not alone. Problems with marriage or relationships, family situations, substance abuse, loss of a job, burnout, or parenting issues life can be overwhelming or debilitating, and at times beyond our ability to manage alone.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
