Sometimes we have moments in our lives were we feel lost in our present and wonder where our confident past self went. We have other moments where we feel pulled in many directions by friends, family, work, and or school. This feeling of being pulled is overwhelming and sometimes brings about guilt. My name is Adenike (Aah-deh-knee-keh). I am a first-generation Nigerian/Haitian, queer, cis woman; my pronouns are she/her. Let’s sit down and talk about life. I will hold a safe, trusting, and non-judgmental space for your unique life experiences, true authentic self, and help guide you through life in a way that feels most comfortable

Victor Frankl: “In between the stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power and freedom.” When we are anxious we can think 100,000 thoughts a day. Usually negative ones. But thoughts are not FACTS. What you do with those thoughts is what matters. If you can change the way you think, you can change the way you feel - it's that simple. Daily gratitude, mindfulness & humor are excellent tools to help you. Things come together and things fall apart. Life is like a boat ride in the ocean - let me help you find your sea legs and your life vest. And if you can learn to pause - you will catch the sunrises and sunsets.

Therapy allows us to pause for a moment and reflect on our priorities, goals, and values. Via therapy, I hope to provide a safe and empathic space, to foster a relationship based on trust and respect, and to listen to your concerns and anxieties. Throughout sessions, together, we can recognize counterproductive thought patterns, nurture inner strength, and learn new coping strategies. I specialize in anxiety stemming from people pleasing, perfectionism, & poor boundary setting. This space is filled with high achievers who, though have great intentions, deal with several stressors and pressures which affects their quality of life.

As we navigate our lives, we are faced with life transitions. These changes can trigger anxiety, depression or other feelings. Often transitions can challenge our existing belief systems, which in turn, cause confusion and feelings of distress. Having someone who can truly listen and understand these challenges often helps us find our way to a more satisfying life. Sorting through the clutter of our lives and zeroing in on our true selves can help us optimize our happiness and contentment. Living a life in which we thrive not merely survive. In a highly confidential environment, we start wherever you feel comfortable.

Were you abused, neglected, and traumatized? Were you raised by a tiger mom? Did you raise yourself and everyone else? Do you feel frozen, numb, and disconnected from your body? Do you feel like there's something wrong with you? Do you have a need to be perfect? Do you feel anxious even during downtime? Are you always running and doing and still feel it's not enough? Is food your only friend? Yet, on the outside, you look like the most put-together person. If only people knew what was on the inside.

I am incredibly fortunate to have my dream job and feel a sense of fulfillment and pride in my work everyday. I know for many of us we do not have that opportunity and have numerous challenges that prevent us from feeling fulfillment, happiness or stability, which can cause immense distress that may be due to anxiety, depression, panic, and feeling lost in general among other complex emotions. Counseling can help give you clarity, and create and work towards goals that lead to happiness and optimism about life overall, you just have to reach out.

Life transitions can be particularly challenging for teenagers, as they navigate the complexities of identity formation, high school to college transitions, peer pressure, and family expectations. I believe that these transitions should be viewed as opportunities for growth, self-discovery, and resilience building. By utilizing a strengths-based approach, I empower teenagers to develop coping mechanisms, enhance their self-awareness, and make informed choices during these pivotal moments in their lives.

I am a queer, nonbinary therapist who specializes in working with clients of all ages who are exploring their gender, sexual or romantic identity, and/or sexual trauma. There's no such thing as TMI in therapy with me: we can talk about sex, dating, abuse, religion, money, family, and other "shameful" topics without judgment. We can cuss, cry, laugh, share memes, and make darkly inappropriate jokes about mental health. Therapy requires honesty and cutting through the bs; we find healing and joy through authentic connection with others.

I am a Ph.D. Clinical Psychologist in the Heights for 20+ years, trained in cognitive-behavioral & psycho-dynamic approaches. If a deeper understanding of a problem is desired, a psycho-dynamic approach focuses on understanding past family and relationships and patterns allowing for self-growth. In practical issues of changing behavior and/or learning a new approach, a cognitive behavioral approach assesses desired behavior changes, obstacles and strengths to obtain goals. In both approaches, I ask questions in a safe and cooperative style that allows for new perspectives and growth. This is especially helpful in couples therapy.

Confusion. So Many things have happened in your life, and you can’t seem to put your finger on “why?”. It’s as if you are putting together some of the pieces of the puzzle but something is missing. You have the edges and even most of the center…but you see that it’s not complete. Yet again you ask yourself that haunting question - ‘why do I keep doing some of these same behaviors?’ And you’ve sought out help from many different people both professionals and friends; you’ve even turned to your faith for answers but all to no avail.

Deciding to take that first step to better yourself and change your life is tough when you are afraid the person you have chosen to help you just may not be able to or even understands your needs. As your therapist, I recognize wholeheartedly how important that first step is. Together, one of our focuses initially is building confidence, comfort, and rapport with each other, so that as we walk together through your issues, you can feel good about doing so. We will develop a plan of care specifically for your individual needs rather using than one specific method based on “identifying markers".

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Houston?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
