Whether you are a trauma survivor, a family member or friend of a survivor, or a professional dealing with vicarious or personal trauma, I'm here to help.
No one gets to adulthood without living through painful experiences. You may be feeling the effects of a single traumatic incident (sexual victimization, a tragic natural disaster, or the sudden loss of a dear one), or you may be struggling with the weight of years of hurtful events. The term "trauma" seems like a buzzword these days, but for some of us, trauma has deeply influenced our lives. When we experience suffering, we can feel like it becomes our identity. But it doesn't have to be that way. Healing from trauma -- single incident or multiple events -- is possible.

People enjoy daily routines in life. Going to work, spending time with family and friends, and hobbies that they love to pursue. Sometimes, unhealthy habits intertwine with such routines, such substance use or non-communication with family members. These habits can interrupt our daily routines and turn into an obsession. Instead of looking forward to the weekend to spend time with healthy endeavors, the weekends could be a time to escape or isolate

If you’re hoping to become a better human, if you’re ready to invest in yourself and your relationships, I offer authentic connection and companionship. Change only happens in the context of trusting relationships, I believe, and I strive to be as genuine as possible in the counseling process. I seek clients who are ready to invest in themselves and desire support for the journey. Are you exhausted every day trying to just keep up? So many responsibilities and demands. You are overwhelmed, stuck, embarrassed or feeling alone in this. Always rushing and always late, forgetting and losing things. This could be you or your kids and ADHD. If you are female, chances are you got missed with a diagnosis and maybe you're just beginning to wonder if this is "the thing" for you or your family. Life doesn't have to be this hard, find out by getting an evaluation now. In an effort to keep costs affordable, I keep my testing brief and targeted. My assessment can be shared with your doctor, work or school.

Welcome. My name is Samatha and I specialize in areas often related to interpersonal trauma such as post-traumatic stress, anxiety, depression, grief, relationship problems, and issues of social inequity. Interpersonal trauma can include anything from childhood trauma that occurs in the family of origin, to ongoing discrimination in everyday life. Often times, trauma interferes with our ability to trust others and the world around us. This makes it very difficult to feel safe and secure in our own skin. It can be challenging to engage in the present moment and feel fulfilled, and it can compromise our health in many ways.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
