I have almost 20 years of experience with the LGBTQ+ population, mood disorders, trauma, infidelity, addiction recovery, family conflict, infertility, life transitions, mindfulness, and spirituality issues, and I utilize a systemic therapy approach.
If you are going through a life transition, it’s normal to experience many emotions. Talking with a professional can help you process what you're going through, navigate difficult emotions and situations, and assist you in problem-solving. I am a Gottman trained therapist, which has particular benefit for couples. I'm available for individual or couple sessions, and I work with clients over age 17. For New Mexico clients, I am licensed to provide teletherapy. Please visit my webpage at www.drpageheisser.com .

Welcome, fellow earth wanderers to my therapy page. If you've made it this far, you are at the point of knowing something isn't quite right in your world. That means you're above and beyond the others walking through life thinking, "it's fine. I'm fine. We're fine". I'm an empathetic, open minded veteran who also will likely have a cat join in for session. I have many...let's call them therapy animals. I offer a safe, inclusive, affirming safe space. Although I'm a white male, I have years of experience working within LGBTQIA+ and POC populations and am committed to exploring unconscious bias and working in an anti racist way.

After twenty years of practice, I continue to find that people are best served by a counselor who is emotionally and psychologically available to them in a time of need. I have enjoyed strong effectiveness working with depression, relationship conflict, grief, and anger management. I work with couples, older adults, teens, and children. These experiences have inspired me to incorporate multiple approaches that fit the personalities, interests and needs that people bring to my practice.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
