I work with clients individually, but also as a family unit.
As a mother of three, and a counselor for over 20 years, I know how difficult it is to grow up in this world today. Therapy provides a safe space to work through those things in our lives that are difficult. I specialize in working with children, adolescents and young adults. I use play therapy, art therapy and talk therapy with my clients. I strive to offer hope and solutions to families with children dealing with such issues as trauma, grief, loss, abuse, depression, anxiety, suicide ideation, self harm, and much more. My clients are also those that need solutions for navigating behavior, peer relations, ADHD, ODD or autism.

I view persons as made up of emotions, thoughts, relationships, biology, and our spiritual selves. Consequently, I first help you stabilize by making necessary changes in behavior. Medical or neurological contributions and possible nutritional deficiencies are examined. I address any distorted thinking that is contributing to your emotional pain. If systems in your life (family, work, school) are a factor, they are also addressed. Finally, we work with the larger questions of existence (spiritual issues, issues of purpose/ meaning), which are all vital to mental health. All areas are dealt with from a solid grounding in the science.

My goal as a professional counselor is to build warm, open, authentic, and non-judgmental partnerships with my clients. Everyone deserves to thrive - not just survive. This is the ultimate goal for the majority of people but we all have different obstacles to overcome in the process. Often the obstacles are too overwhelming to face alone or a person may feel "stuck" in one mindset and need help seeing alternatives.

My approach is all about empowering you to see your life from a fresh perspective so you can find the way forward. My goal is to partner with you to unearth new choices you might not have considered and embrace your strengths. As the parent of a struggling teen, you often find yourself wondering what you can do to help them feel better. You feel like you've tried everything, but nothing seems to be working--at least not for long. No matter what you do, you just can't seem to reach them. Their personality has changed, and sometimes you worry that things could get worse. You know they have so much potential, but where did it go? Reaching out to a therapist can be scary because you want someone who can truly connect with your teen, and you want someone who will keep you informed on their progress.

Experienced with providing family counseling, working with blended families, families coping with terminal illnesses, depression and anxiety.
I understand that life brings unexpected transitions. During these transitions people sometimes need someone to help facilitate change, someone to listen without judgment, or voice their thoughts in order to gain a fresh perspective. The goal in counseling is to help those in crisis, navigate through grief, anger, confusion, and those who feel out of control gain control. I have worked in several inpatient hospitals and private practice for six years and that has allowed me to counsel military families, clients with suicidal thoughts or attempts, addicts, and those who struggle with psychosis.

"You are here on earth because there is something that only you can do!" Choosing Now as the time to act and being fully present in your body and in your relationships will take you to infinite possibilities. All of life's answers lie in how deep you are connected to yourself. Do not turn your attention elsewhere to look for the truth, for it is nowhere to be found but within your body.

I appreciate working with people in various parts of the family life cycle and have found that I seem to click well with adolescents and young adults as they seem to progress through the launching phase.
My overall goal of therapy is holding you accountable in a nonjudgmental way that supports your goals, validates your efforts, and challenges you in a way that aligns with your worldview. I like to offer feedback in an objective way and suggest skills and perspectives that you choose whether or not to implement. The methodology of my approach is conversation; two people in a room trying to figure things out while utilizing various perspectives, theories, and attempts. An emphasis of my time with you is always you; your goals, thoughts, emotions, and beliefs are valuable and I find exploring them in a therapeutic setting helpful.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
