Stumbling blocks....this is a way to describe some of the patterns and responses we can get caught up in over time that hinder us from fulfillment and joy. We all have them and they can show up in our relationships, at work, as parents, with our family of origin and with ourselves. In my therapy practice, we unpack our maladaptive tendencies and their roots to fully understand what holds us back or doesn't serve us. We then learn new ways of being and determine what is within in our power to change. This shifts those stumbling blocks to stairways.

Focusing on each individual, couple, or family I use modalities that are most appropriate for clients to take the first steps in this healing process.
Feeling stuck and overwhelmed with life's pressures? Juggling all areas of your life but coming up short and feeling depleted? Whether it's a big life transition or milestone, making an important decision, or managing parenthood without losing sight of yourself - together, in therapy we will help bring understanding to the intricate roles you play in this ever changing ecosystem. Oftentimes an unbiased listening ear, empathy, encouragement, and perhaps another point of view is all that's needed to help empower you to move forward in a healthy and joyful way.

As an Addiction Social Worker, I specialize in empowering individuals to recover from addictive behaviors via support and counseling. With an extensive working knowledge of diverse recovery approaches, including family recovery, I feel privileged to help individuals with addiction and their families create change and enjoy productive, meaningful lives. As research shows, addicted individuals often struggle with additional challenges, such as trauma, grief, and mental health disorders and I recognize that quality treatment must be comprehensive to include treatment of these issues.

The teenage years are the most vulnerable, exciting, and growing years of a young person’s life. Self discovery can often yield low self esteem, independence can easily shift to rebellion, and a slow maturation process often creates impulsive decision making. And when a parent’s warnings and worries don’t seem to have an impact on the teenager’s course, or when it feels too heavy to carry alone, it’s helpful to have another guiding force to help. Through counseling, an adolescent can feel understood, begin to understand themselves, and learn to understand and accept their role in the family and society.

I have been in practice thirty years. I see psychotherapy as a process of increasing self awareness, developing a more realistic and tolerant self esteem, and identifying and working through losses, disappointments and relational conflicts. This process enables reduction in pain, greater self acceptance, and comfort in relationships and family. This process occurs in a collaborative effort between you the client, and myself. The safe environment of the office allows for the full expression and understanding of what you experience, think, and feel. Our work together enables symptom relief, greater personal understanding, growth, responsibility and contentment.

I use family systems concepts to illuminate and improve relational patterns.
Have you "disappeared" in order to be in a relationship? Do you feel "selfish" considering your own needs and wants? Would you like to stand up for yourself AND still be in relationship? Is the phrase, "I matter, too," one you want to believe? If so, the time has come to create effective ways to move into relationship with Self and Others. The truth is that each of us matters equally. When we live from a place of mutual importance, we honor boundaries, make decisions for ourselves, and are responsible for the only person we can truly manage, our self.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
