My approach to treatment is rooted in relational psychoanalysis in which principles of mutuality and curiosity inform the spirit of the therapeutic dynamic, while the impact of our early attachments and family history guide the process of working through ingrained patterns and developing healthier ways of coping with stress and relating to others.
I work with people who are searching for an authentic and interactive therapist who will help them resolve underlying issues that lead them feeling unfulfilled and dissatisfied. I provide an open and validating space so that you can freely explore your difficulties while also challenging you in a non-confrontational way. I have a flexible approach and incorporate techniques from different modalities in order to meet your individual needs. I look forward to collaborating with you and understanding what you're hoping to achieve in therapy.

I provide individual, couple, family, and group counseling for adults and adolescents.
I believe that treatment works best when it is tailored to the personality and individual needs of each client. Rather than relying on one theoretical perspective, I utilize a multi-modal approach, which consistently yields faster and longer-lasting results. My approach to treatment is grounded in psychodynamic and inter-personal theory, which I integrate with cognitive-behavioral (CBT) and solution-focused techniques. I have extensive experience dealing with a variety of psychological problems, including depression, anxiety, and trauma, as well as work-related, phase of life, marital, and family issues.

I have experience with anxiety, depression resulting from family losses, relationships, from everyday living.
I have learned the "connection" we make in therapy will lead to fruitful change. We begin by working on very specific concerns, to the more elusive, abstract conflicts of a more esoteric life that aren't so simple to characterize. Everyone comes to therapy with different hopes, unique needs, and a desire to seek what is transformational. I work to create a trusting relationship with all of my patients. In the initial sessions, I focus on what brings you to therapy at this moment in time and to establish a working rapport where you feel safe and listened to, without judgement. Therapy is a unique opportunity to find your voice,

I incorporate approaches that consider development, family dynamics, and body-based psychotherapy.
As a clinical psychologist with over 30 years experience, I foster an atmosphere of collaboration with the goal of helping one to begin to understand and change the blocks in life that create stress, difficulties in functioning at work and in relationships, and within one's self. We develop strategies together to change patterns and feelings that create a sense of being "stuck" into more flexible and creative ways of changing those patterns. Treatment can result in more clarity, more optimism, and hope in making vital changes to live more fully.

I specialize in treating anxiety and depression that often stem from relationship difficulties, career indecision, family of origin challenges, and significant life changes.
Are your ways of managing stress, anxiety, or depression no longer working as they once did? Are you overwhelmed with a new issue or struggling with long-standing frustrating feelings and ready to make a change? My role is to be your partner in understanding yourself more deeply. We will put our heads together to uncover how beliefs about yourself and the world came to be, and how some may be preventing you from feeling satisfied in life. We often come to therapy when we are feeling stuck, and I want to work with you to understand what barriers are in the way to your feeling as alive and fulfilled as you hope to be.

There is no ideal client. Each client is a unique subject who has been shaped by an infinitely complex set of circumstances; family, culture and inherited predispositions. The one thing that they have in common is that somehow there is a sense that things are somehow not right and yet still entertain a suspicion that things can improve. Working in an open, honest and interactive way, marked by curiosity, compassion and courage we will work together to discover patterns and styles that hinder the experience of joy, intimacy and achievement. Together we will work to overcome the crisis of debilitating guilt, anxiety and depression.

Starting therapy is a brave step. It means facing yourself and the challenges life has thrown your way. The external world of everyday experiences, family dynamics, and social or workplace interactions can deeply impact our internal world and cause us to lose our balance. As your therapist, my aim is to help you find that balance. I am here to support you, tapping into your inner strength to help you function and feel better.

In addition to my clinical experience I teach psychotherapy courses to graduate psychology students and hold a Director of Mental Health Position at NYU Lutheran Family Medicine where I teach physicians how to assess and address psychological needs of their patients.
I am a warm and insightful psychologist who focuses on helping people make significant changes in personal and professional areas of their lives. I work with adults, couples, and families who are dealing with transitions or want to maximize their full potential. In the first session I identify the areas which are most crucial to focus on and the approach which will be most useful for reaching your goals quickly. We then jointly create a plan of action for reaching your objectives.

Understanding the value that therapy can bring to a person’s health and wellbeing, I strive to provide a safe space for everyone who enters my office. I have experience working with a diverse population providing individual, couples and family therapy. Although I may be an expert in the field, I know my clients are experts in their own lives. By working together, I hope changes can be made and for their goals to be reached.

Everything looks great from the outside. No one would guess you're actually struggling with something. You're always on the go. Plenty to do with a demanding job and a busy family life. People who know you think you've got it all together. They have no idea that inside, you feel like your world is crumbling. This grief is with you every day. Intrusive thoughts about what you could have done differently, what you said, what you didn't say, what you should've said. So many memories, so many regrets. You want to heal. You want to move forward. A part of you is scared but deep down you know it's time to face this loss.

A brief family history is gathered.
Individuals chose therapy for many reasons. Most start because they want to feel calmer and happier in the wake of life's changes. Dr. DeSole works with adults (18 y/o +; Gen-Z to retirees!) to cultivate their curiosity and identify the patterns that prevent them from creating the life they want to live. She is extensively trained in both psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral psychotherapies.

I have been a therapist in private practice for 20+ years. As a therapist I utilize a range of modalities and fit the modality to the needs of the individual rather than the individual to the modality. I have worked as a consultant to a special program for individuals who have a history of sexual assault and violence as well as family violence and, in addition, have taught for 15 + years at Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service. I have worked successfully with relationship difficulties, employment difficulties as well as with those with a history of PTSD, mood disorders and marital conflict.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
