No one can tell what's really going on. You are doing everything to try and keep it ALL under control: your job, relationships with family and friends, and your relationship with your partner. But inside, your thoughts are racing, its hard for you to take a deep breath and concentrate, you can't sleep well and your constantly overwhelmed. You are not sure how much more you can take.

This change will, generally, create adjustments that reverberate within the entire family, work or relationship system.
Do I need therapy? Is there something wrong with me if I do? These kinds of questions deeply concern one dissatisfied with his life. A person who enters my practice is interested in improving quality in his life. Feeling lonely, confused, stuck and frustrated interfere with living a full, rich life. Failed or unrewarding relationships; unsuccessful or disappointing work/career situations are clear reasons to seek therapy. Through the work we do together, I help each person redesign his life to create a lifestyle more fitting to meet his needs to begin experiencing life in a most meaningful and rich way.

I was initially trained in Family Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Therapy should be treated as a space to confide in a professional who can help you find insight into problematic patterns of behavior, enhance the ability to take perspective, and understand how previous life experiences shape who you are today. I strive to create a safe, judgment-free space for my clients with empathy, compassion, and objectivity where they can openly process their feelings and begin the path to change.

My professional view of counseling is that it is a journey of self exploration by the client, using therapy as a guide to self understanding & self awareness. I, as a marriage and family therapist, use the skills that I have learned and developed throughout my education and clinical experience to facilitate growth in my clients. I am not an expert in any of my clients’ lives, but I strive to learn who they are from them and allow them to make decisions for themselves. I allow the client to guide the session so we can talk about the deep rooted problems when they are ready & tackle the daily struggles that cause anxiety & depression.

Work problems are often related to behavioral patterns developed in youth in family environments.
My practice primarily focuses on individuals seeking treatment for issues of self-esteem, relationships or work problems. These problems can create feelings of despair, loneliness, and hopelessness. Normally, we all begin experiencing these feelings as children and as adults we may develop behavioral patterns which contribute to the perpetuation of low self-esteem. In therapy, we explore the reasons for self-defeating behavior. As we become more aware of what we do and why we do it, we can begin making the necessary changes for a successful future.

I have 20 years of experience as a psychotherapist working with individuals and couples in NYC. I am a non-judgmental, compassionate, and very supportive therapist. I have experience with adults of all ages coping with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, family conflict, life goals, loss, pregnancy and new motherhood, and a variety of other therapeutic issues. I also work with patients who may just need someone on the outside of their daily lives to talk with, in order to be the best version of themselves. I believe that flexibility and drawing from different therapeutic modalities is the best way to create positive changes.

I am an LMFT with an MS in Marriage and Family Therapy, a BA in Biology, a Certificate in Divorce Mediation and, to mix things up a bit, a Certificate in Broadway Producing.
My work is informed by decades of experience in the professional performing arts. Skills honed in the theatre—active listening, trust-building, and authentic communication—are the basis of productive therapeutic relationships and serve my patients well. Relationships are not linear, and neither is couples therapy. The best place to start is in the here and now. Addressing what is happening in the moment leads to greater understanding, empathy, possibility, change, and a healthier future. Your relationship is unique, nuanced, and complicated. My job is to gently untangle the complex web you have woven.

My work as a psychotherapist is enriched by early training as a special education teacher, extensive post-Masters training and experience as a psychoanalyst and child and family psychotherapist, integration of cognitive, relaxation and sensorimotor approaches, and current involvement as a supervisor and teacher of psychotherapists and psychotherapists- in-training.
I am a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst with over 25 years of experience helping a wide range of individuals. All shared feelings of being stuck or blocked in fundamental areas of their lives. Powerful feelings and beliefs involving shame, fear, anger and sadness had disconnected them from inner sources of strength and self-esteem, and had prevented them from living and working freely and fully. I see psychotherapy as a collaborative relationship in which we identify and resolve those obstacles, leaving you with a new or renewed sense of authenticity, energy and hope.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
