The techniques used are often simple, ranging from somatic work, kundalini yoga to psychodrama, internal family systems, and bioenergetics.
Do you want results? Are you finding that you keep getting in your own way? That your emotions, trauma, pain, old stories and anxiety are preventing you from living the life you are meant to live? Or maybe nothing is clicking for you, no matter how are hard you try. The good news is that there is always a way, a technique or subtle perspective that can and will shift you and your life. The catch? You need to be willing to step into the unknown and get uncomfortable.

Whether with individuals, couples, families or as a leader of group therapy, I combine psychoeducation and an eclectic mix of techniques from traditional talk therapy, psychodrama, EMDR, Somatic Experiencing and mind-body techniques. My practice has been primarily virtual since the pandemic, but I am starting to see clients in person on Wednesdays. Please inquire!

Are you wondering if your parent is a narcissist? Do you find yourself walking on eggshells, scared that something you say or do will set them off? Do you end up doubting yourself after each interaction, worrying that you are a bad person? You keep trying to fix things, to be more understanding, so that your parent will finally be happy. All the while, you just want to be close to them. You wonder why does this have to be so hard? You're the truth teller in your family and it gets lonely being the only one who sees what is happening. Your main comfort is binging Dr. Ramani YouTube videos because it helps you feel less crazy.

I work with individuals across the lifespan, and I use a relational psychodynamic framework and a family systems approach.
I believe in the self determination and depth of your interiority and therapeutic journey. I believe much of what we experience as symptoms, interpersonal difficulties, role conflicts and stuckness is also a product of the many social contracts and norms that shape how we were raised in society, what we were told was the way to a good life, and how that may no longer exist or is experienced as broken, in sometimes traumatic or unnameable ways. The clinical space can offer a way to examine and explore your singularly experienced patterns more deeply in order to work toward healing and self actualization.

I’ve been trained in psychodynamic, family systems and cognitive behviaoral therapies and call upon all of these modalities depending on the needs of the client.
Being human is a wondrous and challenging endeavor. Most of us walk around each day feeling inadequate, lost, anxious or depressed. And yet something inside us yearns for more. It takes tremendous courage to slow down and listen to this voice. To turn towards the painful feelings and try to understand them. I believe that with the right support, the hard stuff is actually the gateway to a life that is more purposeful, meaningful, integrated and peace-filled. In my office I create a warm and engaging space for clients to build self-awareness, heal old wounds and reflect on patterns that may not be helping them.

I also have extensive experience working with people who have autism or an intellectual disability, as well as providing support to their family members.
The experience of sharing stories, and feeling seen & heard in a safe space can be transformative. I draw from several evidence-based modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy, and Strength Based Therapy. Beyond the traditional modalities, I take a holistic approach with each client and believe in the power of integrating emotional, physical, social and spiritual wellbeing.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
