The primary ways I will support you and/or your family’s goals are through empathetic reflection, relationship building, and problem solving.
I work with individuals, children, and families who may be experiencing stress, feeling disconnected in their relationships, or facing challenges within their family. These and other similar life challenges can be very uncomfortable experiences and difficult to handle alone. Together, we can develop effective skills to manage stressful thoughts and feelings, increase self-awareness, and simply enjoy relationships with those most important in your life.

Pregnancy can be one of the most wonderful and stressful times in a woman’s life with enormous changes in family dynamics and relationships. Whether a new parent or care taker, or experiencing the tragedy of interrupted pregnancy or loss, expectations for a new mother can be very high and too often dismissive of the unique stressors involved with making a new human. When unpredicted changes happen, people can feel alone, isolated, and afraid to give voice to their vulnerabilities. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with extensive experience in working with the perinatal and first responder population. PSI certified.

Feeling overwhelmed, anxious or discouraged because of a challenging relationship in your life or a big change? Changes, difficult people in our lives and demanding jobs can leave us drained, confused, and extremely frustrated. Lets talk about balance, boundaries, self compassion, gaining perspective, and finding ways to find peace amidst the challenges. We can work together to understand negative patterns in your life, and choose to make positive changes for yourself, family, faith and work. I especially love working with other helpers such as nurses, EMT's, social workers, ministry leaders, teachers, and parents.

Anxiety and depression can make it virtually impossible to experience joy and contentment. We might imagine a catastrophic future or constantly relive a difficult past. Problems don't get solved and we feel stuck. Therapy can help us think about our lives more clearly and align our actions with our intentions.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
