Generally, each person and I begin by exploring the issues that has brought them to seek out my services. This exploration entails a joint effort that unfolds over time. A relationship is formed that helps us both to see more clearly how the individual is operating in their everyday life. It is through such an exploration that the individual begins to understand themselves, and, especially, their more intimate relating. I also believe that the person leads the treatment such that we will only go as far as each person desires. I can offer ideas, but, in the end, it is the individual who leads us.

You might feel anxious, or depressed. You want to change but you feel stuck, unable to move forward. You might be unhappy with aspects of yourself, or your relationships, but you do not know what to change, how to change. You might suffer because of trauma, or for a loss that feels too hard to bear. Talking to a therapist can help. If you decide to meet with me, my first goal will be to connect with you, and help you feel understood. Working from this connection, I will try to help you understand more of yourself, and know how to change using the therapeutic techniques most appropriate for your characteristics and needs.

For anyone searching for an ally in approaching the challenges of life, choosing therapy can be a great option. Some of the issues I work on are trauma, depression, anxiety, ADHD. I specialize in working with individual adults, adolescents, with families (parent-child focus), and athletes. Another specialty is helping individuals and families from adolescence to adulthood in understanding and navigating neurodivergence, especially as related to Autism. I welcome folks from any walk of life, though my practice is explicitly anti-racist, LGBTQQ+ positive, disability-conscious, and cognizant of systemic harm.

Shall we talk about the issues you face? You may not be sure how to deal with them on your own. We could talk them through and consider the best solutions that would ease your mind by removing worrisome thoughts. Learning how to resolve some of these issues with people you relate to all the time will increase their understanding of you.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
