Many come to therapy knowing only that they are struggling to get things done, their relationships have become a source of stress rather than comfort, or they need help processing trauma, loss, or other painful experiences impacting their daily lives. Whatever your circumstances, I strive to help each person or family I work with achieve greater emotional, psychological, and social well-being, while also alleviating symptoms. I use the power of storytelling and understand that each person I work with has many, important stories to tell. I also value and work with each person's nervous system in the healing process.

Foundational to all of my work is the belief that individual pain is rarely isolated from other factors like structural oppression, family dynamics, work and family expectations, etc.
Are you feeling stuck in patterns that leave you unfulfilled? Perhaps you are struggling to understand or embrace your full identity. Maybe you are going through a significant life transition. Or maybe you feel “off” and don’t know what to do about it. Therapy can be a powerful resource to reconnect to yourself, address a specific issue, explore your thoughts and emotions, and just get support for the challenges of life. Clients bring all sorts of challenges to our work – depression, anxiety, life transitions, relationship issues, body image challenges, sexuality questions, athlete specific issues, and more.

Are you or a family member struggling with an addiction, loss, stressful job or other personal concern? As an active and engaging therapist, I have observed that when the chemistry between therapist and client works, the process of therapy can provide a multitude of results: curbing self-destructive patterns of behavior, providing relief from painful emotions, increasing productivity at work, increasing behavioral control and achieving greater meaning in one's life. I believe that these meaningful changes occur when there is a joint process of discovery in which the therapist attends to the expressed needs and goals of the client.

I am experienced in treating people suffering from a range of problems, including, depression, anxiety, identity struggles, problems with thinking and attention, school and career difficulties and family and relationship struggles.
As a psychologist and psychoanalyst, I aim to help patients understand the trouble in their lives and make significant changes. I believe it is important to take the time to get to know patients' stories. My approach is both collaborative and challenging. Sometimes this involves helping people look at parts of themselves that are painful, or hard to see clearly. Many patients benefit from long-term, intensive therapy, while others find that shorter-term therapy helps them solve immediate problems.

Additionally, when treating adolescents with eating disorders, I utilize the modality of Family Based Treatment which I have substantial training in.
My practice has primarily lended itself to the treatment of Eating disorders, and other co-occurring struggles such as OCD, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, personality disorders that are commonly associated with this illness. Currently, I also work in a University setting with both undergrad and grad students, but in the past was the Clinical Director of both an Inpatient Eating Disorder Unit and a Psychiatric Unit. These experiences have provided me with the background of treating adolescents, young adults/adults, and families from all different backgrounds.

I have 20 years of experience as a clinical social worker and prior to that was a home-based family counselor. I view my role as helping the person clarify troubling life experiences, past and present, and to understand their responses to those experiences. These may include: difficult relationships and families, unresolvable ambiguity; agonies of adolescence; substance and alcohol abuse, or legacies of trauma and existential dilemmas. I believe each person contains the seeds of their own solution and I work to nurture that individual solution. This happens in a relationship where it becomes safe to "say anything."

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
