Everyone needs relationships. Whether you're looking for a safe, healing relationship within which to explore and repair past hurts or trying to mend or strengthen existing relationships, I'm here to help. I believe personal growth requires a supportive and secure environment, and I've been told my warmth and humor have put clients at ease as we seek to understand what they are wanting from therapy in order to increase meaning or satisfaction in their marital, parenting, family, friendship, work and spiritual relationships. Walking with clients as they let go of old patterns and learn new ways to live more authentically is an honor.

Open and taking new clients! (telehealth) The "ideal client" I imagine working with is an individual that is characterized by having difficulty coping with anxiety, self-esteem, ADHD, relationships, and offer Christian based counseling. The needs of the client I imagine would be empathy and compassion towards that individual, space for their voice to heard and their story to be respected. I imagine my ideal client would desire "practical" but, "impactful" coping techniques to alleviate symptoms. I imagine my "ideal" client aspiring to regain "control" back into their lives and to feel "empowered."

With over 20 years experience as a licensed psychologist, I think of the therapeutic relationship as a method for understanding the self. To that end, behavior patterns can be explored, internal experience can shift with the movement towards change. Perhaps you are caught in the same cycle and feeling frustrated. You may be adjusting to a life or career transition. Stuff from the past is triggering and you might not understand why you feel the way you do. We can explore and understand the meanings in a safe and creative way.

I am experienced and passionate about working with individuals, groups, and queer couples. Areas of focus include LGBTQ identity work, becoming an anti-racist, embodiment, substance use, spiritual trauma, interpersonal and internal conflict, and anxiety.

When it comes to mental health treatment, our approach is simple and unique: our accomplished team of physicians and therapists work together to diagnose and treat your body, mind and spirit as a whole. We are one of the few practices combining traditional treatment with evidence-based alternative therapies, all under one roof. We are privileged to have changed the lives of many families in Chicago's North Shore, as well as out-of-state and foreign visitors. Our "whole body" approach to treating mental health conditions is supported by clinical studies. These include but are not limited to: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), diet and exercise, spiritual/social evaluation, yoga and art therapy. Many still focus only on the brain, treating symptoms, not causes. In many cases they over-prescribe medications. While our physicians do prescribe medications as needed, what sets us apart is our commitment to explore all options. We search for root causes and provide the most appropriate treatment, not merely the most convenient one. When we do prescribe, we go the extra mile to customize a plan that minimizes side effects. You and your family deserve the best in healthcare!

Let's talk about something we all know to be true – life is one big tangle of relationships. Whether you're dating, single, married, engaged, part of a cozy little family, or navigating the chaos of a massive one, relationships are everywhere. And, you know what? Contrary to those picture-perfect moments we see online, not all of these relationships are sunshine and rainbows 100% of the time, or even 50% of the time! But, here's the deal – you're not alone in feeling some type of way about your connections with others or with yourself.

Using a mix of attachment theory, strategic therapy, and experiential approaches, you can be sure I will keep you engaged and motivated to show up to sessions where you will participate in more than just talk therapy. I obtained my master's degree in marriage and family therapy from Wheaton College and describe myself as a "systems thinker." I welcome the opportunity to meet with families, couples, or adult individuals. I also have a special interest in working with couples navigating ADHD, families with older children, and individuals struggling with codependency.

The world is filled with stories about who we should be, what we should do, how we should feel, what we should want, and about who we are if we don’t fit into those narratives. These stories, shaped by culture, society, religion, family, and experiences can help us find meaning and purpose initially. But, often things don’t play out as we'd like, which leaves us confused, hurt, uncomfortable, overwhelmed, frustrated, discouraged and afraid; feelings often exacerbated by others' expectations. Untangling and making sense of our own stories creates the opportunity to rewrite these shoulds and make meaningful, intentional changes.

I aim to provide an empathic, relaxed, and secure therapeutic space where you feel safe to freely explore your inner world and take risks in the outside world. One may have relationship difficulties, be depressed or anxious, experience trauma, or just feel incomplete and want to expand their self-development. Some people's everyday coping strategies stop working as well as they once did. Others may find themselves repeating distressing patterns in their lives or feeling something's wrong, unable to verbalize or comprehend their pain. We will work together to make sense of your experience through insight and emotional understanding.

Eroticism is adult play: ideally it is expansive, vibrant, joyful, and stress-free. Living in a sex-shaming society damages our ability to have a loving, easy relationship to our erotic, sensual, and sexual identities. That damage can lead to conflict and disconnection with ourselves and our intimate others. Our relational health is a necessary ingredient in our overall life satisfaction. Most of us long for our intimate relationships to be a safe haven from the stress, overwhelm, and chaos of our lives. When that isn’t the case, it can lead us to feel lost, uneasy, and wondering how to find our way back to a feeling of security.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
