Hello! I am Rebecca. Parenting is one of the most joyous and difficult ‘hats’ I have ever worn. I have had the privilege of working with children and parents in different capacities for most of my career. Every parent could use a space to process life and receive unconditional and nonjudgmental support. Empathizing and encouraging are strengths I bring to the therapeutic relationship. I am especially passionate about working with parents and families who live the shift work or first responder life. I would love to walk alongside you and your family in this journey of parenting.

I want to help you find meaning/purpose in work, family, friendships and all other areas of your life.
You deserve to live a life that you love. There are many people who see therapy as something intrusive, not necessary or believing that they will be judged. As a therapist, I believe that the connection built between the patient and therapist is the foundation that can lead you to the life that you want to live. My only goal as a therapist is to help you achieve your goals and to see you become happier with the life you are currently living. Yes, sometimes therapy can bring up painful emotions, memories or events, but this pain can lead to growth and a better life.

Has your life taken an unexpected detour? Maybe it's a chaotic relationship, unrelating anxiety or navigating difficult family dynamics. Whatever your struggles might be, fighting these battles on your own can be difficult, painful and sometimes overwhelming. However, there is an incredible amount of power in a strong therapeutic relationship where you can process life with someone who desires to fully understand you with a lens of compassion and empathy.

My passion and focus in therapy is treating individuals and family systems with complex and developmental trauma. This includes survivors of childhood trauma and caregivers who are navigating the complexities of foster care, adoption, and/or parenting with their own history of childhood trauma. I use a few different therapeutic modalities to best fit my client’s needs, and as a board certified art therapist I like to utilize art making and creativity in my sessions to deepen client’s understanding and build trust.

Children and adolescents experience a wide range of issues such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, difficulty regulating emotions, and challenges with impulse control. These issues make it difficult to deal with unfortunate but common factors, like family or sibling conflict, parental divorce, or unexpected loss. Many children respond to these issues and factors with less-than-desirable behaviors, such as electronic/video game addiction, educational challenges, difficulty making friends, substance abuse issues, or destructive and defiant behaviors.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
