In my work with adolescents and adults across the life span, I utilize a strong CBT and strengths-based approach as well as family systems, psychodynamic, trauma based and mindfulness-based approaches.
Whether you have hit a rough patch, realize the need to address old wounds, or feel as if you have lost your way, a mental health therapist can help guide you back and create a new path forward. Many people face seemingly insurmountable obstacles that may be rooted in personal life stories or internal or external forces that seem to be working against them. I am passionate about meeting people where they are and helping them develop a path forward to a healthier and more fulfilling life. I believe all people possess strengths and the ability to effect change in their lives.

I have a special interest in working with individuals and couples dealing with infertility or difficulties building a family.
Sometimes life throws you a curveball or two. Some people have been dealt a difficult card from the start. I believe we all possess the tools needed to get through times of adversity, but at times, may need a little guidance. Having an objective ally to cheer you on can really make the difference in reaching your goals and feeling confident along the way. I strive to create a stimulating, comfortable, and safe place for people to be vulnerable. I tend to have a relaxed conversational style, while using evidenced based materials and approaches. I am committed to jumping in the muck with you so we can find solutions together.

I am inspired to work with individuals struggling with trauma, relationships, women's issues, life transitions, family of origin, and BIPOC/Asian American identity.
I specialize in helping adults heal from recent and past abuse, neglect, marginalization, and other painful experiences. I understand how these experiences cause wounds that impact relationships, work, and happiness, and are often the root cause of anxiety and depression. Together we create lasting change by lessening the impact of current symptoms such as anxiety and depression, while developing a deeper understanding of the root causes of each person’s struggles. I seek to understand each person’s experiences and the effect they have on their lives, past and present.

My goal is to bring a tailored approach that is as unique as your family in order to create a therapeutic environment that works for YOU.
Currently accepting new clients! Email is the best way to get in contact with me. Rudolph Dreikers says, “Children are keen observers, but poor interpreters”. Growing up and learning how to exist in a chaotic world can be extremely challenging in even the best circumstances. Children with trauma, neurodivergence, or any other challenges may have an especially tough time with this.

Serving the central Illinois community for over a decade, her areas of expertise are trauma related to interpersonal or family violence, sexual assault and abuse, adoptive and foster care, school problems/workplace problems, parenting, and couples therapy.
Dr. Venus Evans-Winters is a licensed clinical social worker, trauma professional, and professor. She draws upon multiple therapeutic and psychoeducational techniques (e.g. cognitive, dialectical, and reality therapies) to meet clients' mental health and socio-emotional needs. A native of Chicago and representative of the hip hop generation, she helps culturally and linguistically diverse clients cope with chronic stress and trauma. Her practice is influenced by Adlerian theory and centers culturally responsive approaches to practice because we know that culture is a major influence on one's perception of stress and self-efficacy.

I am devoted to helping people not only address their physical and mental health, but also to identify how stigma impacts the healing process. I began in 2014, working with both adolescents experiencing Substance Use Disorder and their families. Since that time, I have developed skills working with people experiencing a wider range of challenges including: depression and other mood disorders, anxiety, and trauma. My intention in every session is to provide a safe space for people of any race, gender, sexual orientation or family structure (however that may look for you). Asking for help is hard and I can only hope to honor that.

If you are struggling with transitions in your life, your family, job, have a hard time facing each day or are looking for a way out of the cycle of constantly feeling like it won't get any easier, call today for an appointment to get support navigating this new path, so you don’t have to face this journey alone.
Life is full of transitions and they can be extremely difficult. It can be easy to feel overwhelmed, discouraged and like nothing will ever get better. Even when the transition is your choice - like a new job, going back to school or having a baby, it can feel like you will never settle into a new normal. That can be even more challenging when the transition is not your choice - like divorce, chronic illness, struggling with infertility, or trauma and loss. Transition can be even more overwhelming when it feels like you are going through it alone and don't have any support.

I am a therapist who helps adults and couples who are struggling with life’s hurtful problems: single parenthood, relationship conflicts, divorce, difficulties at college, depression/anxiety, a partner or parent’s alcoholism, mental illness in the family, stress at work, news of a serious disease or financial reversal, caring for aged parents, overcoming a traumatic childhood, “empty nest syndrome,” the special pressures on military families, and so forth. Our work together would begin by focusing on the here-and-now, so that you can experience some immediate feelings of being heard and of moving forward.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
