I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy.
In our busy and sometimes stressful lives, self-care is imperative. Tending to our own mental health may become necessary if the struggle becomes overwhelming to manage alone. Once you've made the decision that therapy is the next step for you, finding the right neutral, compassionate, non-judgmental and empathetic therapist is of the utmost importance. My mission is to build a therapeutic alliance with you using a collaborative approach to reach your goals. The evidence-based approaches and interventions that I use are designed to assist you in further identifying and tapping into the strengths you already possess.

My theoretical orientation often incorporates the mind-body connection, combining strategies from cognitive behavioral, internal family systems, and polyvagal approaches.
I view myself as both witness and teacher. I have the privilege of bearing witness to your experiences and holding space for all the emotions that accompany them. Sadness, anger, joy, fear are all welcome here. When we do the work of really trying to understand ourselves more fully, we learn how to respect ourselves and teach others to do the same. It is my desire to help you discover who you are, sort through hurts and traumas that continue to affect you in undesirable ways in the present, and learn to live in alignment with your values and priorities so that you can flourish personally and relationally.

When you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed to the point it is impacting your day-to-day life, it helps to talk with someone who is both kind and practical — offering hope and nonjudgmental support, but also collaborating with you on finding real solutions. We all need a guide sometimes when life is hard. I am the type of therapist who will provide validation when you need it but also encourage you to take charge of the things within your control. I work with adults who are experiencing anxiety, stress, trouble communicating with a partner or family, and job burnout. In particular, I enjoy working with educators at all levels.

My accepting approach is secured in the notion that we all deserve to be welcomed just as we are, including the problems and struggles we bear. Even if our problems have no straightforward answers, we can learn to live with and through them when we are better connected to ourselves and others. As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I aspire to enable this connection. My training is rooted in Systems Theory, which views individuals, couples, and families through their relationship network. I take care to recognize how family of origin, cultural, and contextual factors inform our habits, perceptions, and sense of well-being.

I see counseling as an opportunity to create new possibilities rather than addressing a series of rights and wrongs. I believe that change is most notable when we challenge the faulty thoughts and perceptions we have about ourselves, others, and the world around us. By learning to challenge our thinking we can have greater interpersonal relationships, self-image, and create a more persuasive and stable pattern of moods. I am trained in strategies to assist in ongoing dedication to the identified problem outside of the counseling session. It is essential that counseling relationships are collaborative.

Do you feel heavy with life’s stressors or maybe you're realizing you have some deep-rooted issues from your past that need tending to but worry you will be a burden to your loved ones? Do you avoid by stuffing your emotions down? Avoidance feels good in the moment but long term, it can impact our ability to function as it exacerbates our emotions and leads to things like anxiety, depression, anger, or even addiction. Having someone unbiased and safe to talk to can make a tremendous difference in our ability to cope and feel present for the beautiful things in life.

Day-to-day life can be challenging! When you add symptoms of depression, anxiety, or trauma, life becomes unbearable. Naturally, we are not born knowing how to navigate the flood of feelings or the loneliness that comes from stress, trauma, and losses. Attempting to fix it yourself or ignoring the problem can result in a cycle of escalating emotions. But you don't have to do this alone. Therapy is a collaborative relationship where together we process your personality, values, and strengths and use them to get you to a better and calmer place. I use evidence-based psychotherapy approaches that best suit you, including CBT and ACT.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
