Many of my patients seek therapy to work through issues of identity, family concerns, relationships, and careers.
Therapy can be a process of both healing and growing. Together we can explore important aspects of your past, while working to improve your present. I foster warm and collaborative relationships with my patients so that they feel understood, supported, and appropriately challenged. As your therapist, I would be committed to helping you develop the tools and mindset necessary to face present and future challenges. I would also support you in achieving greater self-acceptance, authenticity, and more satisfying relationships. I approach each new therapy relationship with curiosity, flexibility, and openness.

What does therapy in the time of Covid-19 mean? These days when our life has been turned upside down, our general sense of anxiety may have increased. What will happen in the future? Will my family be ok? Will I have a job? At the same time, this public health crisis is intersecting very uniquely with our own personal life. Maybe you’re a college senior who didn’t get to graduate. Maybe you’ve recently had a loss and now feel more lonely than ever. Maybe now past trauma is coming to the fore. Maybe all of this just feels overwhelming. I can help. I bring a goal oriented, holistic approach to help you bring more calm to your life.

I also have background in behavioral medicine, marriage and family therapy, and neuropsychological and psychological testing.
I am an empathic and experienced Cognitive-Behavioral (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapist. I also teach at Georgetown Hospital and the George Washington University, as well as serve on the OCD Mid-Atlantic Affiliate Board. My treatment aims are as follows: 1) provide direct symptom relief, 2) engage clients in treatment in a way that interests them, 3) appeal to strengths, 4) encourage overall treatment compliance, and 5) explain the clinical process in easy to understand language. Empowerment occurs with the recognition that mental health symptoms have predictable patterns. Symptoms are relieved through changing these patterns. Interactive readings and assignments are encouraged.

My interests include working with clients through anxiety, depression, career stress, co-dependency, relationship and family difficulties, identity issues, burnout, life transitions, grief and loss.
I am a psychotherapist located in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, DC, offering individual, group, and couples therapy. I have a diverse practice and enjoy working with men and women to help them grow from within and improve the relationship they have with both themselves and others. Often, our sense of self is formed by our earliest relationships. In the therapeutic relationship, we can learn to cultivate a healthier, clearer sense of self. I create a warm, empathetic space where clients can learn to better understand themselves, let go of self-limiting beliefs, and build healthy coping mechanisms.

As a gay male psychologist, I am especially interested in intersectional identities, resilience, and processing complex relationships with family.
Welcome to my profile! I'm a compassionate and dedicated psychologist with 12 years of experience. I specialize in helping individuals break free from repetitive and "stuck" thought patterns that may be hindering their personal growth and well-being. Our minds have a tendency to get caught in loops of negative or unhelpful thoughts, which can create distress and limit our ability to thrive. I believe in empowering individuals to challenge and move beyond these patterns, allowing them to embrace new perspectives.

My experiences as a leadership coach and facilitator, birth doula, yoga teacher, family member, and friend all inform how I support people through life changes and challenges.
Loss is the universal human condition. At times, all of us move with a sense of "lostness" - be it around a death, a relationship, our sense of safety, hopes for the future. Yet as a culture, we have a hard time being with loss and accompanying grief. I believe that loss and grief deserve attention. You may know exactly why you are seeking therapy, or you may something may just feel off. My role is to help you learn about yourself and your losses. I hold special interest and skill supporting people with experiences of infertility/pregnancy loss, relationship loss, trauma, illness and death and dying.

You and your partner are not in sync, and are having trouble hearing and understanding each other. You feel sad, scared and angry because you remember how happy you were and this relationship is so important to you. No matter how clear the issues are for you as you try to address them, your partner somehow sees the issues differently. Disagreements aren't getting fully resolved. Or you are dealing with: difficult family, work or social relationships, persistent worries, identity questions, life transitions and adjustments, thinking that you aren't "good enough” for yourself or others, perfectionism, grieving, or healing from trauma.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
