I believe that everything including finances, eating patterns, sleep cycles, family of origin, job satisfaction, nutrition, exercise, support system, as well as identity and sense of purpose are all integrated into the "why's" of our struggles.
Currently doing Tele-therapy, but back in-person starting March 1st 2020. -- The heart of Being Alive Counseling is to journey with you through everyday issues, as well as deeper addictions and trials, towards wholeness and healing. Counseling is not an attempt to fix all of your problems but to journey through them together. Whatever is making you believe that life is not good (be it depression, life transition, a trauma, marital problems), Being Alive Counseling believes you can return to your source of joy and meaning. We love to help in life transitions, to clean up the mental mess and believe it can be good again!

Sometimes we come to a point where we feel like we’ve hit a wall. Maybe you’ve been doing therapy for years, but you still feel like there’s something that needs to break through. If this feels like where you’re finding yourself, I can help. I work specifically with female-identified clients who relate to the idea of being a highly-sensitive person, or HSP. Being a sensitive woman in our world can be a traumatizing experience in and of itself. Beyond that, HSPs often play the role of the scapegoat in abusive family systems, simply because they’re more aware of what’s going on. But there is nothing wrong with how you were made.

Differing communication styles are often the source of confusion, frustration, and overwhelm in relationships. They can create the same conflicts over and over again, whether with a partner, family member, or friend. I work with couples and individuals who are highly motivated to improve their relationships, and still really struggle to understand the other’s needs, boundaries, and desires. Together, we will identify and slow down the spots where communication breaks down, and make space for you to reconnect in new ways.

I use a strengths-based approach to help adults navigate a variety of life issues, specializing in anxiety, issues/trauma from childhood or family, grief/loss, and relationship/attachment issues.
You are an inherently resilient being who may sometimes need support through life challenges, strategies to move through the past or present, or just simply someone safe to talk to, and that is what I am here to help with. Each person is made up of valuable strengths that can be of great use to them in navigating life’s journey—my job is to help you realize and expand upon those strengths to empower themselves, all while in a safe environment. I have worked in intensive outpatient, inpatient, and outpatient settings and use this experience to help my clients wherever they may be on their journey.

I enjoy being a Marriage and Family Therapist because it examines the influences throughout a person's life that have made them who they are rather than jumping to any conclusions about them.
As first generation to Indian parents, I saw my parents struggle with cultural differences. They were raised with similar upbringings; however, their beliefs about relationships were starkly different. I never witnessed them talking about their struggles, but rather, they seemed to view their relationship as what was to be expected. Witnessing this relationship dynamic taught me the importance of bringing differences to the forefront. We get so many messages about who we are supposed to be from family, friends, and society. Relationships bring two people with multi-faceted identities together, therefore, it's only natural for relationship issues to arise.

Have you had some of these experiences? "Growing up, we were taught that our business had to stay in the family home. In African American families, this is not only a matter of decorum, it is a rule about safety- safety that is contingent on you being less yourself, and therefore, it is also about shame" (Burke 44).  Or are you living in denial about what you went through or experienced often times just to survive and get through life, or because you never were taught how to express and process your emotions? Burke, T. (2021) You are your best thing. New York, NY: Random House Publishing Group.

I approach therapy from a relational, attachment, and family systems lens.
As a dedicated trauma therapist, I have special training and expertise in working with children (4-11) and families that have experienced trauma. I also have extensive experience in working with families whose children are facing end-of-life situations, life-limiting illnesses, and chronic health issues. I believe that children and parents are the experts in their lives and view my role as a catalyst for greater connection, attachment, healing, and meaningful change. As a clinical social worker, I recognize the impact systems and institutions can have on children and families and will be your advocate as you navigate these systems

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
