I grew up in the state of Michigan and moved to California in the 60s. I decided to become a therapist in my 20's and received my B.A. in Psychology. However, I was single, working in the airline industry, and was enjoying the travel and postings in other countries. I lived and worked in Japan for 2 years and in Singapore for 2 years. I finally decided to pursue my lifelong interest and obtained my Masters's degree in Clinical Psychology and my license as a Marriage and Family Therapist in California.

I have experience helping clients who are: feeling anxious, depressed, stuck and in need of change; struggling in relationships or with family; coping with life transitions; survivors of trauma; experiencing reproductive health challenges; and building identity and increasing self-esteem.
Finding a therapist can be overwhelming- especially when you need one. I get it. I've been there, but just being here means you're on the right track. To get you started, I offer a free 15 minute phone consultation, so feel free to reach out. Even if we aren't the right fit, I'll refer you to someone who might be. I offer compassionate, open-minded therapy tailored to your needs. Shame, guilt and stigma are not a part of my practice. My focus is to understand things from your perspective and work together to enhance your sense of well-being. I offer teletherapy in both Louisiana and California.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of eating disorders. I’m passionate about providing evidenced-based care and am one of the only therapists in San Diego certified in Family-Based Treatment (FBT), the gold standard treatment for child and adolescent eating disorders. My therapeutic style is warm, authentic, and collaborative. I am deeply empathetic to the struggles that eating disorders pose for clients and their families. I strongly believe that no one chooses to have an eating disorder (nor do parents cause eating disorders) and that there is always hope for lasting recovery.

My goal is to build strong therapeutic relationships with my clients, grounded in empathy and trust. I am committed to learning each of my client's unique and diverse life stories. My clients rely on me to help "unpack" not only the issues that brought them to therapy, but to better understand how their upbringing, family, and life experiences impact their mental wellbeing. I work with adults, couples, families and adolescents (age 16 and up), who are experiencing depression, anxiety and stress, trauma, grief and loss, life transitions, maternal mental health, and relationship conflicts.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
