My name is Dr. R. Austin Heafey - I am a licensed clinical psychologist who works with children, adolescents, parents and families. While every client is unique, my fundamental aim remains the same: improve self-esteem, build self-confidence and enrich my patient's self-worth. When a person has faith in their abilities and feels comfortable with who they are, they are better able to engage with the world they live in, the family they belong to and the life they deserve to experience. Put simply, my objective is to improve my patient's quality of life.

Family Matters Of Marin is a trauma informed group practice focused on supporting children and families. We help clients create more joy, love, and harmony in their lives. We are deeply interested in learning how our clients would like to change and grow, and supporting them in this process. We work collaboratively with clients to improve their relationships and resolve any trauma from their past that maybe holding them back from living the life they yearn for. Often times children, adolescents and their family members may not know what they want or need. As an experienced therapist, I work collaboratively to help understand how thoughts, feelings and actions are connected. Many clients are struggling with relationships, personal, academic or professional goals. We will examine the root causes, behavioral challenges and environmental factors which may contributing. Understanding the therapeutic alliance between client and therapist is key to exploring issues, I offer a genuine, empathic and nonjudgemental approach that helps clients feel at ease and safe to explore these issues.

I specialize in working with individuals with social learning deficits. During intake calls, many parents report their child to have some (or all) of the following traits: Very bright (above average IQ), better with adults and younger children than with peers, interrupts, trouble with balanced conversation (tends to monologue or doesn't contribute), struggles with losing, challenges with emotional regulation and impulse control, inflexible, strong language abilities, difficulty with perspective taking, wants to engage with others but often gets stuck, trouble with problem-solving, and/or executive function challenges.

My objective is to make your life better now and into the future. Therapists helped me over the years, taught and inspired me to become one. I pivoted to my career as a therapist 16 years after earning a B.A. in Economics at University of Chicago. I earned my LCSW at Smith College. I'm a mother of two and a first-generation child of immigrants. In my practice I want you to make the most of your time with me. I work with a range of clients, from executives to college students. My office is tucked into hills and trees. Clients are from my town, Mill Valley, Sausalito, Kentfield, Tiburon, San Francisco and the South Bay. I Zoom too.

I provide psychotherapy to clients ranging from young children to older adults with a wide range of issues. At some point, in most of our lives, we experience difficulty, turmoil, and/or pain in some aspect(s) of our lives; emotionally, psychologically, in relationships, or coping. I do my best to connect with and understand the people I work with on many levels. Together we identify and explore the patterns of adaptation which are no longer effective and contribute to pain and suffering. Over the many years in this profession, I have been humbled. Real change, however defined, often takes time, attention and care.

I have been in practice as a licensed psychologist for the past 28 years in Marin County where I was also born and have raised my two boys. My approach to assessment and therapy is integrative as it attempts to consider all relevant biological, psychological and environmental influences on a person’s current well-being. Sessions leave ample space for depth-oriented, psychodynamic/attachment based processing of inner struggles and vulnerabilities. They also include collaborative, practical, and hands-on problem solving as well as exploration of cognitive behavioral tools and strategies appropriate to the developmental age.
