Are you a parent struggling with your child's big emotions and the behaviors that go with it? Feeling overwhelmed with parenting and the weight that it carries? Maybe you are experiencing a life transition and want to make sure your child's mental health is supported. Parenting young children is HARD - but shouldn't feel impossible. Research shows the biggest impact on children's mental health comes from supporting the family system. My goal is to give you the tools you need to support your child, while also feeling supported as a parent.

I have received training in family play therapy, attachment play therapy, Theraplay, and EMDR.
Parenting a child with baffling and challenging behaviors can be lonely and isolating. When I adopted my own children, I just wanted to be a mom. I thought that love was enough. The reality is, these children have suffered enormous loss and trauma and often display challenging behaviors. I am blessed that I am able to walk alongside families on their path to healing and share what I have learned. I have been a pediatric critical care nurse for 19 years. I have spent my career helping children and their families during what was most likely one of the most challenging and stressful times in their lives.

I would like to help your family find hope and healing.
My background as a school counselor has heightened my sensitivity to the pressure children and teenagers face at school—pressures to conform, excel academically, manage emotions, foster friendships, and cultivate self-esteem. These challenges are particularly daunting for individuals coping with anxiety, depression, ADHD, and other mental health conditions. I've helped numerous children gain the necessary tools to confront these obstacles head-on, enabling them to flourish in their academic pursuits, interpersonal relationships and overall well-being. I would love to help your child build resilience, bolster confidence, and thrive.

Welcome! Chances are you or a loved one has experienced feelings or events where a counselor might be beneficial. You are not alone. Joy and sorrow, pleasure and pain, and confusion and clarity are part of being human. Whether you prefer movies, television, or books; the most resonating stories address these common themes and reflect the depth and breadth of life. As such, your own story is naturally filled with such complexities. Whether your experience includes anxiety, depression, shame, loneliness, grief, life transitions, or conflict in relationships; may you hear the gentle whisper “Courage, dear heart”.

I love working with people who are ready to understand their emotions and to engage in a process of growth and healing. My clients often feel that the ways that they have been coping are no longer working and they are ready to try something new. Whether they are struggling with anxiety, depression, or interpersonal conflicts within their support system, I assist them with taking a deeper dive into examining the underlying sources of their discomfort.

Every day you go through life with a smile on your face hoping that you can simply keep it together. In passing, people ask how you are doing, and you give the standard answer: “I’m fine. Thank you”, but deep down you wonder if anyone will ever see past the smile, and past that standard answer. You think to yourself, “Will anyone ever see the pain that I am carrying? Does anyone see Me? Does anyone even care!?”

Appointments for teens and adults are via telemedicine. Children, age 4-11, are in person. Are you depressed? Feel unable to get out of bed, paralyzed by fear or overwhelming heaviness? Do you wonder what happened to that happy couple you used to be? Do you have anxious thoughts keeping you awake, or draining your energy? You don't have to solve your problems by yourself. Get help in a safe environment where you can explore your feelings and devise a strategy to turn things around. Change happens when you actually do things differently.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
