I work with individuals, couples/co-parents, and families. I see children in play therapy from three years old and up as well as adolescents. I work with many families going through the difficult family transition of separation/divorce/remarriage/grief. I enjoy working with couples and utilizing the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to remind couples to acknowledge, appreciate and respect their differences. I found the MBTI to be especially beneficial to couples considering marriage or long-term commitments.

Emerge Family Therapy is a network of therapists and student therapists dedicated to helping the Spartanburg community.
Do you need help navigating a particularly tough time in life? I believe that therapy can provide a space for individuals to safely and openly explore problems of any kind. My goal is to collaboratively work to create a comfortable and supportive atmosphere in which we can gain a better understanding of your problems, which can often lead to new insights about how to approach it. Finding the right therapist is often a frustrating process that takes some trial and error. But when we're able to find the right fit, it can make a difference. I'm happy to answer any questions you may have to see if we would be a good fit for one another.

I don’t just work with neurodivergent clients, I live a neurodivergent life with my family, too.
Life on the autism spectrum, or living with ADHD, epilepsy, or learning differences can bring all kinds of unknowns. The future can feel scary and lonely, and there’s a lot to figure out. You‘ve got ways to cope, but you want to thrive. On your terms, and in your own way. If someone you love is navigating young adult or adult life on the neurodivergent spectrum, you have questions and uncertainties, too, and support isn’t easy to find. Imagine having someone to talk to who understands the stress and weight of the challenges you face. Imagine having a safe, open, and supportive environment to be yourself and explore a hopeful future.

There are many challenges or stages in life that can cause us to feel out of control and uncertain. Having a safe person to help us along the way can make all the difference. Sometimes we just need a safe person to understand our feelings and thoughts. Other times we may need guidance with finding the best tools that allow us to overcome a challenging time. I believe that therapy works best when it is a collaborative effort between therapist and client. My goal is to get to know you and help you find what works best for your life.

I enjoy working with clients who are struggling with issues that are either acute (recent) or chronic (lifelong). I find that it is particularly important to form a working relationship that will focus on a path of discovery that will begin to identify possible solutions. Often problems can be resolved quickly such as parenting issues and sometimes issues are very complex and require examining a thorough history of life experiences from childhood to the present. I am always amazed how my words stick with people for years and years and I believe that a journey of discovery takes many paths and has many time frames.

There is a thread that runs through all the painful experiences we have as humans. Whether its depression, anxiety, loss, addiction, an existential crisis, or the myriad of other issues we face, these experiences of suffering all generate the same feeling of aloneness. These stark moments of aloneness are at the heart of our sorrow, and I have spent my life learning how to connect to people having these experiences so that they feel less alone. I feel really passionate about working with couples and groups as well as individuals.

Parenting neurodivergent children is an adventure full of trials and triumphs. After your child receives a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), or another neurodivergence, you may find yourself swimming in conflicting information and guidance. You find yourself searching through the internet to figure out what services your child needs and how to best support them. If only you had a guide who can help you understand and meet the unique needs of your child.

It takes courage to reach out to others, especially when you’re not sure where to turn. This can be especially true if in the past, it's felt unsafe to be your authentic self. That’s why it’s a priority for me to help you feel welcomed and safe from the start of our journey together. I want to help you through the challenges you face. I will work to get to know you, your relationship(s), or your family in order to help you reach your goals. I also believe your access to services is important - I exclusively offer telehealth appointments for your convenience.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
