I am experienced in working with people confronted by trauma histories, relationship challenges, low self esteem, anxiety, depression, family challenges and self harm.
You deserve excellent therapy. My clients describe me as authentic, humorous, engaged, insightful, brave, creative, well resourced, experienced, non-judgmental and effective. People I work with have a desire to heal and create their lives as a reflection of their values and unique perspectives. With couples, I use PACT, EFT and Gottman approaches to support the couple on their goals, in a safe space, where honesty and authenticity lead the way.

Therapy is an opportunity to help people diminish pain, cope with challenges, and gain support through adverse experiences. Additionally, it challenges personal growth through insight development, compassion and attentiveness. I have 14 years of experience in a variety of therapeutic settings that have equipped me especially in areas of relational dynamics, leadership and identity development. I often work with individuals struggling to align their beliefs and values with the people around them; whether that's the family, workplace or a faith institution.

I have experience supporting new parents through the postpartum period, survivors of abuse and violence, and family members through estrangement.
Loneliness is the worst. Isolation shows up in many forms, including shame, stress, mistrust, and unproductive conflict. People grow and heal in the context of secure relationships, and I aim to help clients create and sustain them. It's my pleasure to work with couples, partnerships and individuals who are experiencing distress, coping with trauma, or struggling with identity development.

I believe that family systems play an important role in the client’s life, and in relationships.
It can be hard to talk to someone about personal concerns, especially those related to sex and relationships. As a clinician at Carolina Sexual Wellness Center, my goal is to promote healthy sexuality while providing a safe and accepting space to explore what that means for you. I strive to help clients feel as comfortable as possible so we can work together regarding any challenges they may face. I am committed to creating an open, honest, and safe environment to discuss difficult issues. I believe therapy should be a place free of judgement where clients can be their authentic selves.

My therapy style combines interpersonal, ecological, family systems and behavioral tools in an effort to understand, embrace and uplift multiple ways of being.
Many of my clients relate to the experience of feeling "othered", different or as existing outside of culturally-constructed margins. In our increasingly isolationist world, feeling different or other is becoming a common experience. While many things may remind us of our difference, or "non-normativity", in therapy I aim to collaboratively uncover and identify the worth and purpose that I believe exist in all humxn beings. I believe that all concerns, struggles, challenges, curiosities and explorations brought to therapy are related to relationships--the relationship we have with ourselves and other people. Often, clients express a need for deep connection and goals involve enhancing relationships, identifying emotions, coping more effectively with emotions, and nourishing self-worth and confidence. Research on therapeutic effectiveness has repeatedly demonstrated that therapeutic relationship is the principle determinant of positive therapeutic outcome. Thus, when I first meet clients, client-therapist relationship and chemistry is the primary emphasis and catalyst for change.

I've always wanted to incorporate animals into therapeutic activities. My family has all rescues and I’ve volunteered with APS of Durham for over 10 years. Animal assisted therapy is generally done with the therapist's personal animal. My pre-Covid sessions were typically in home with you and your pet, developing more connection and emotional support. I moved my small practice to primarily tele-health but try to be available and flexible to meet when you need. It’s also important that the therapy is a fit for what you need and you can be yourself. I’m building a therapy space in Hendersonville Fall 2024 onsite sessions..

I approach therapy as a collaborative partnership. My style is authentic, nonjudgmental, and compassionate. I think therapy should not be some mysterious process so I provide feedback and tools to help you make changes. Together we identify patterns in your life that are no longer working for you and find new ways of living that give you more of what you want. In my practice I offer individual psychotherapy to adults in person and via tele therapy.

I specialize in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). My approach to psychotherapy is collaborative, creative, evidence-based, results-oriented, flexible, and holistic. People often arrive at psychotherapy when they want to deal with problems, alleviate emotional suffering, make a change, move in a new direction, or find well-being. I try to balance acceptance and change, acknowledging that the first step towards change is accepting reality. I think the therapeutic relationship needs to be a real and genuine connection. I value being kind, genuine, thoughtful, direct, honest, and playful as a person and a therapist.

I have 15 years of experience working with clients with trauma and mood disorders. I also work with people struggling with eating disorders, grief/loss and life transitions. I speak Spanish and have a strong interest in working with Hispanic/Latinx communities. I am a strong advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community. I find tremendous benefit in assisting people with identifying various forms of oppression (e.g., racism, sexism, homophobia, etc.) and understanding how these impact their lives. In my practice, I focus on helping people to free themselves from the effects of difficult, early and ongoing life experiences.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
