I am Certified as a Family Based Therapy (FBT) Therapist by Training Institute for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders, trained at Stanford University Eating Disorders Clinic under the supervision the developer of FBT.
Let’s face it, change happens, and it happens fast. Sometimes we aren't equipped to handle change. And it’s that that we are not up for the challenge, but that challenges emerge when a person attempts to make sense out of change using skills that worked in the past and are no longer meeting their current need. In my role, I take a warm, directive stance to not only challenge, but also empower individuals to reimagine their role as the expert on their life, by creating new alternative perspectives and establishing mastery of new tools and skillset to increase their quality of life.

As a BIPOC, adoptee, I serve the community as a family support expert and certified life, health, and wellness coach.
To heal is to touch with love that which was previously touched by fear. We all have times when we need extra support to work through life's challenges. Whether it be mental health concerns, trauma, relationship dynamics, identity exploration, life transitions, family relations, work stressors, or any other difficult circumstance; you don't have to walk this journey alone. Together we will work to empower you to put your needs first and take steps to reach your goals. Everyone has a story and is worthy of space to tell it, and together we will honor, heal, and learn from your experiences.

And at times, when the person who is ill doesn't survive, I work with grieving family members.
I have been a psychotherapist for over 30 years. Early in my career I co-authored a book called Relationships, which explored how marriages either succeeded or failed. My work on the book helped me formulate a way of working with couples, one that was supportive of struggle in the interest of strengthening the relationship bond. I attempt to help couples not only survive but also to thrive. In addition, I do long- term psychodynamic work with individuals . I have worked with many people struggling with depression, anxiety and post traumatic stress.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
