I have experience working with a broad range of clinical issues: relational/family difficulties, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, grief/loss, parent/child conflict.
We carry on our day to day lives, hope for change, work hard and at times still feel like nothing is working; we feel like these challenges make it impossible to move past or live the life we intend to live. I provide counseling for individuals, and couples of all kinds dealing with challenges that leave them feeling stuck. It is my privilege to work alongside you to provide you the space to experience, examine and process what is going on in your life right now.

Your family doesn't have to do this alone.
“Children don’t get traumatized because they get hurt. They get traumatized because they’re alone with the hurt.” -Dr. Gabor Mate. I am a therapist specializing in the challenges faced by children and parents. I have over a decade of experience working with children of all ages (and their parents) as their teacher, coach, and counselor. Many of my clients are teenagers. They struggle with academics, learning differences, or pressure to succeed and achieve. They are navigating relationships with their peers, teachers, parents, and other adults. They may feel anxious, depressed, stressed, or withdrawn. (YES, I have availability!)

Life comes at us fast and we’re not always ready for it but that’s okay! I believe that we all crave connection with our peers, friends, family, and partners. And when we aren’t working on those connections, we’re working to build our connection with ourself. To fully work through that and make progress, I use a direct approach in helping clients address concerns that may arise from their connections with others or with themself. I believe that the most progress can be made when it’s accompanied with empathy and unconditional positive regard - two pillars of therapeutic work to foster growth and a sense of safety.

I am a therapist with ADHD, so I love working with clients who have ADHD. I think our similar brains strengthen our understanding of each other and therefore our therapeutic connection. I will never tell you to just “try harder” or “buy a planner” or other things that neurotypicals have said to you (although I do love some good office supplies). Everyone with ADHD is different and deserves personalized exploration of their needs and barriers to help manage symptoms and achieve functioning goals. I also love working with couples who have ADHD, including mixed neurotype couples who are working to better understand one another.

Our clients are high achieving millennials, identity-developing gen-zers, people in transition, and people who think deeply about themselves and their growth. Our clients are asking: Why do my emotions feel so out of hand? How do I understand my relational patterns? How is my experience of trauma showing up in my every day life? Do I have ADHD? Do I have bipolar? Am I on the right medication? Should I take a break from work? How do I manage difficult relationships?

Maybe you’ve asked yourself what’s wrong with you. Maybe you're are at a crossroads. You’re overwhelmed and trying your best, but the pressure is huge. Sometimes our usual ways of coping stop working or aren't giving us what we need anymore. This can affect us through tension in our work and home, tiredness, or worry about ourselves and what's next. My favorite clients are those who are seeking greater self-understanding and acceptance, are wanting closer relationships, and who want to explore new ways of approaching life. I like helping clients work outside of the boxes they arrive in and believe in themselves, one step at a time.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
