I have over 20 years of experience as a therapist, working with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma; and stressors related to related difficult life transitions, unhealthy relationships, and family conflict. I believe a productive therapeutic experience should focus less on the bad choices you have made in your life and more on the right choices you decide to make going forward. Your past is important but not as important as your future. You will leave therapy, empowered with new tools and feeling confident about the new direction of your life.

I work in a number of different modalities including: individual, couples, group and family therapy.
I have been a practicing psychotherapist in the metropolitan area for the past 25 years. I received my B.A. from the University of Virginia and MSW from Catholic University. Emotional distress, as uncomfortable as it is, represents not only an opportunity to heal, but a chance to grow. It can be a chance to discover how to be effective at reaching one's objectives and achieving fulfillment, whether it be emotional, relational, or professional. My aim is to assist in this process.

I bring to each therapy session years of training, experience, and insights. I've been married for 49 years, with children and grandchildren I dearly love. My focus is on helping you solve your problems, whether they be with your family, spouse, significant other. It's been said that either we go through life or life goes through us. We all need to learn to navigate this life so we find more joy and happiness. I also work with custody and visitation issues, and, have worked with many children over the years. I enjoy individual therapy as well.

My orientation is theoretically integrative - assimilating elements of psychodynamic and family systems theories into an overarching cognitive-behavioral framework.
I like to think of psychotherapy as an intersection between science and art. As a clinician, my task is to merge the art of empathic healing with the scientific rigor of empirically-supported treatment - by providing therapy that is effective, individualized, person-centered, and culturally informed. Our therapy relationship will be based on mutual respect, trust, and collaboration in pursuit of your unique goals. Together, we will work to solve problems and improve your quality of life, by implementing evidence-based treatments in a manner that is consistent with your values and sensitive to your needs, strengths, and preferences.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
