If you are dealing with difficult emotions related to family, relationships, loss, shame, grief, transitioning beliefs, substance abuse, unhealed emotional wounds, or deep self-doubt it can be overwhelming. I believe, with compassionate guidance, we can all find the power within ourselves to create solutions to difficult problems, to discover personal meaning, and to overcome and grow from our life challenges. We can develop self-acceptance, self-forgiveness, and self-compassion. My commitment will be to walk this path of discovery by your side.

Mental health matters, and sometimes we need help and support to get us to where we want to be. My goal is to help you feel safe, valued, and respected. Your healing journey matters, and I would like nothing more than to help you along the way. Whether you are experiencing anxiety, depression, family struggles, or the effects of trauma, I’m here to help. I enjoy engaging clients in parts work through Internal Family Systems (IFS). I've found that IFS can be very effective in treating trauma, anxiety, and depression.

Though I’ve called Utah home for the last several years, I grew up on a dairy farm in rural Idaho, surrounded by cows, potato fields, and family.
I am a therapist because I believe everyone deserves to be truly seen, heard, and healed. Life might have taught you that you are unworthy, incapable, or unable to experience peace. I hope to guide you through your journey of healing and growth. I believe that the resources you need to find that peace and healing are inside of you–after all, you know yourself and your needs better than anyone. It can be hard to ask for help and be vulnerable with a stranger. I do my best to cultivate an environment where you feel safe to share not only your struggles, but also your joys and laughter.

Most of us just want to be have a sense of being valued, heard, and cared about, especially from our partners. When this is not the case, distress in the relationship sets in, which can take a toll on one’s emotional, mental, and physical health. Negative interactional cycles lead to conflict and result in attachment injuries, lack of connection, decreased intimacy, mistrust, sexual dysfunction, and a breakdown in the entire family system. Changing a couple's communication patterns, repairing injuries, and placing attention on the friendship leads to emotional connection and increased relational and sexual satisfaction.

I am a marriage and family therapist, with a PhD in developmental psychology.
Most of my clients are high functioning people who are struggling with a specific issue in their lives. Some feel stuck due to depression, anxiety, or relationship issues. Some are dealing with a chronic illness. Some are transgender, have a gay child, or are in a marriage with a spouse whose sexual orientation is different than theirs. Many feel frustration or even hopelessness about negotiating their situation in the context of their cultural or religious upbringing, their marriage, or extended family relationships.

Kia ora! I am JC. I work with couples, families, and individuals. I specialize in couples therapy because communication is key to an excellent relationship. Some of the most common reasons couples come to see me are: disagreements, relational trauma, family issues, and infidelity. The most important thing to me is a good connection between client and therapist. I work very hard to keep a warm, inviting, and non-judgmental atmosphere in my sessions. I go at your pace and work on the things you want to work on. I am here to help you!

I believe the research and have observed how loneliness hurts: we thrive when connected and struggle when isolated. I utilize EFT and the Gottman Method with couples; I focus on family work with children because individual play therapy is often unhelpful, in the long-term; Filial Play Therapy and PCIT are my favorites models for parents with their children. I utilize ACT and Arbinger principles in most of my work. I foster connections with my clients but especially between clients and their people, including their spiritual Connection.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
