I am a strength-based therapist and believe each individual and family is unique and comes with their own gifts and challenges.
It can be difficult to do the "right" thing, especially when it comes to raising children. Being a parent is hard. And so is being a child. I am here to guide and empower you and/or your family in discovering your full potential through open communication, playfulness, and learning to enjoy each other. Your child may be struggling in school with behavioral/emotional issues- as a play therapist I approach these challenges through play because I believe that is the language of children. I have experience as a school social worker and am familiar with IEP's and behavior plans and can help navigate these issues with you.

I enjoy working with individuals who are motivated to help themselves, open to change and willing to have deep conversations about their challenges. I have special interest in working with individuals who have endured any type of trauma in their lifetime or those experiencing relationship or family issues. I strive to provide an environment that clients feel safe, supported, and validated. In turn, this will lead to a positive therapeutic relationship in which self-reflection and processing can take place.

My clinical expertise is addiction/substance abuse treatment (both user and impacted family members) as I've worked in both inpatient & outpatient settings. I am very familiar with 12-step recovery but it is not my only tool. I can provide evaluation/assessment and potential referral to rehab if needed. My style is hands on & solution-oriented -- my goal is that you leave our sessions feeling empowered, motivated and have more coping skills to manage your life. There is no reason why you should continue to suffer or struggle; you deserve to feel better & develop confidence in yourself.

Interests include child/adolescent issues, particularly with teens and preteens utilizing structural family therapy.
With over 25 years of experience in this field, I am unique and eclectic in my approach. I particularly enjoy working with clients who have been seen as "difficult" by others or who have been dissatisfied with counseling in the past. I recognize the hard work that goes into bringing about change, but still feel the overall experience in counseling should be enjoyable. I am passionate about my work and try to make myself as accessible as possible. I welcome the opportunity to discuss your issues with you in a totally free/phone consultation.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
