I draw from a wide range of treatment modalities including Attachment Theory, Mindfulness, CBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and Psychodynamic.
I think we all truly want to make more sense of ourselves, our experiences, and our environment. We want to feel engaged and nurtured in our relationships. We may pursue therapy to find self-compassion and acceptance, notice and give voice to the different parts of ourselves, rediscover our whole being, and strengthen our relationships. I acknowledge and affirm your strengths, while addressing with you those patterns that leave you feeling stuck. Through an open, curious, warm, relational style, I will listen to your story, and help you make the changes you’re interested in making.

My hope is that we will work together to build a solid foundation within yourself and/or your family system to healthfully "weather the storms" of life.
My goal as a therapist and Clinical Supervisor is to increase your zest and vitality for life, to foster your ability to take action (empowerment), as well as to support you in having clarity (a clearer picture of yourself and others). Each of these goals, I believe, lead to an increased sense of self worth. In my time as a therapist, I have found that growth occurs both individually as well as in connection with others and that growth fostering relationships (of all kinds) that are created through mutual empathy and mutual empowerment are a key aspect of all of our lives.

I also include in my grasp of any client appreciation for their family, social-cultural, and socioeconomic context.
A person considering counseling is already making the first step of trying to achieve, or return to, a healthier and happier equilibrium. I believe that “loosening up” and releasing the many things we hold, particularly unconsciously, allow us to activate that capacity and return to, or discover, a healthier state of being. Top-down, this would involve uncovering our various thought patterns, reactions, and story that we have about ourselves. Bottom-up, it involves noticing and feeling - the various ways our body is in relation to how we are mentally.

I enjoy working with families, couples, and individuals who are experiencing relationship problems. I also have a background in treating depression and anxiety. My approach emphasizes helping people achieve practical results and is based in family systems and cognitive behavior theories. One of my guiding beliefs is that people are basically competent and are always seeking to solve problems on their own. In most cases this works well, but sometimes people get stuck and their attempted solutions either have no effect or make things worse. I see my role as helping people get "unstuck."

I try to offer a balance of insight and sensitivity to each client and family that I see.
(Please note that I am currently located in Illinois and can only offer video or phone sessions). It was Irvin Yalom who said something to the effect that "psychotherapy is like a dress rehearsal for life". With this said, it is my intention to not only offer you support in therapy but to also help you generalize the skills you learn in therapy and apply them in your outside life and relationships. I specialize in anger and anxiety management for adults and adolescents. I also work with highly intelligent adults and teens who have a difficult time adjusting and adapting socially and work with high functioning autistic individuals.

My theoretical orientation is rooted in Systems Theory and I utilize interventions from Family Systems Therapy, Internal Family Systems, CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, ARC, as well as Somatic and Mindfulness based psychotherapies.
I believe the role of a therapist is to be more than a reflective and empathetic companion in the client’s journey and must also incorporate directive approaches in order to alternate between being a companion and being a leader on that journey. Inherent in this belief is that clients are coming to therapy because they want something different than what they currently have. This can be as simple as a new perspective on a past or current struggle or as complex as a new skill set for managing and overcoming emotional, behavioral, cognitive, relational, or somatic patterns that have arisen in response to emotional distress.

Past trauma, childhood family dynamics and life experiences all impact our personalities and emotional stability and need to be part of the path to the solutions.
My goal is to meet the client where they are at and work together towards identifying what their struggles are, what gets in the way of addressing them and building skills to grow from there. Using mindfulness to increase awareness and understanding of the connection between mind and body we learn to recognize how emotions and other factors impact mood, attitude, attention and relationships. I view people through a trauma informed lens to ensure that all aspects of their past and present are considered possible influencers and may need to be better understood. I like to say my hope as your therapist is "helping you help yourself".

Welcome. My name is Alexandria (she/her). I help people repair relationships, connect back to the body, and nurture a love of self. The way we do all these things is through story-making. First we will uncover what stories you tell about yourself, then we seek out a version that is empowering, liberating, and true. I believe that all humans are storytellers by nature, and I invite you to write a story that promotes your self-discovery and growth. We will work to understand how your family of origin and cultural influences shape you, freeing you to choose how you show up in the world.

We believe in supporting the entire family in therapy, whether all members attend sessions or not.
We help new parents, young children, and teens to create healthier relationships and work together to navigate family conflict, life stressors, and adjustment to change. Do your child's emotions and outbursts seem out of control and too much to handle? Does your teen seem anxious, depressed, or withdrawn? Are you and your partner arguing constantly about parenting? Feeling sad and hopeless, or not bonding with your baby or child like you thought you would? We can help.

Welcome to a nurturing and mindful approach to therapy. You may have experienced a trauma, stressful life event, bad relationship or family conflict. You have worked hard to provide yourself and your family a good foundation. Now you are ready for deeper work of healing, growth and improving relationships. Perhaps you are a parent wanting to connect with your adolescent or you are an adolescent going through a stressful time. Adolescence is a time of great change and challenge. It's so clear that we are meant to navigate this as a tribe when adolescents and adults are more isolated than ever before in our society.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
