My ideal client is a person dedicated to making positive changes in her/his life. These adjustments may be as simple as a new hair style or as complex as brain surgery. I invite the client to tell me about himself, including hobbies and interests. What is he most proud of? What might he like to improve? What was the nicest thing anyone ever said about him? What really hurt? I encourage the client to comment on the paintings in the room and what they might have in common. They all have something to do with going somewhere. I tell them that my favorite professor at Boston College, William Meissner. S. J. said of therapy, "It's all

I am experienced working with all ages and genders, but have a particular affinity for children/teens dealing with Developmental Disorders. I usually work with patients as young as 5, and about 50% of my caseload is adults of all ages. I work closely with the local schools, and am happy to help coordinate 504 plans and IEPs. I typically work within the Cognitive Behavioral framework and incorporate elements of many other approaches. If you'd like to know more about me or see if you'd be a good fit form my practice, feel free to give me a call or an e-mail.

I have 20 years of experience as a clinical social worker and prior to that was a home-based family counselor. I view my role as helping the person clarify troubling life experiences, past and present, and to understand their responses to those experiences. These may include: difficult relationships and families, unresolvable ambiguity; agonies of adolescence; substance and alcohol abuse, or legacies of trauma and existential dilemmas. I believe each person contains the seeds of their own solution and I work to nurture that individual solution. This happens in a relationship where it becomes safe to "say anything."

I have also worked with those who suffer with depression, stress and anxiety, addictions and compulsions, grief and bereavement, phobias, insomnia, parenting or family problems, chronic pain or illness, eating disorders, and etc.
I am a warm and empathic therapist who will help you to see and grow into your best self and improve your day-to-day life. I believe that a person is more than just the sum of their parts, that people have many levels of self-awareness, that we have free will and participate, rather than simply observe our lives, and that we all have purpose, value, and meaning. We can choose happiness and contentment. Much of our suffering and despair (and our joy and fulfillment) comes from our relationships with others. I want my clients to be treated with respect and care in their relationships and to believe that this is an attainable goal.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
