Everyone has a story. While we learn language as children, we also learn languages within our relationships and interactions. The content of those interactions may eventually become the words that we speak. We learn to express ourselves according to these terms, but there is always more to the story. Through your lens, my goal is to help you cultivate awareness of specific patterns that perpetuate “stuck points” and support you while exploring your languages, interactions, and connections. I will provide a safe, nonjudgmental environment for us to explore the hurdles that impact your fulfillment and development.

Feeling like the weight of the world is on your chest recently? My name is Natalie, and I am a licensed professional counselor. I believe in the power of a strong therapeutic relationship, and I value creating a safe and inclusive space for my clients to explore life’s challenges. To me, therapy is a place to slow down, feel, connect, get creative, and shed judgement. I am a therapist who will choose interventions based on client’s needs. There are all kinds of ways to create “good therapy” and I would love help to co-create what that looks like for you.

Life is full of twists and turns we never expected to encounter. We feel alienated and out of balance. Sometimes we simply feel lost and do not know which direction we are facing. Feelings of depression, anxiety and/or physical symptoms can shadow this experience and lead us to feeling more isolated. When we find ourselves in just this situation we tend to view it as if we are stuck. To me, however, we are being called to transformation and more often than not we all need assistance as we walk that path.

Life doesn't always turn out how we hoped, and that can feel painful or even daunting. Maybe you have thoughts you feel you can’t control, or doubts and confusion about who you are or what you want. People may have caused you pain or caused you to doubt what you once believed, and you feel stuck, unsure how to move forward. Whether the source of your pain is from the church, your loved ones, a shifting faith, or a complete mystery to you, healing is possible.

I offer clients warmth, compassion, and gentleness: Whatever is hard for you right now is welcomed in a space that allows you to be accepted completely for who you are. I provide therapy for adults who struggle with the impact of childhood emotional injury, relational wounding, loneliness, trauma, parenthood challenges, divorce, career struggles, marriage issues, grief, anxiety, and depression. Unresolved hurts show up as restlessness, sleeplessness, negative self-beliefs, loss of purpose, panic, anger, anxiety, and/or depression. Together we will create opportunities for healing, self-discovery and connection to a fulfilling life.

I take a client-centered focus in therapy; meaning I believe you are the expert of your experience. As a trauma-informed therapist, I think it is important to meet you where you are with the recognition that healing and growth are not linear. I approach this by building a strong therapeutic relationship. This relationship develops into a trust where you and I can work collaboratively for you to make the desired change you’re seeking.

I view therapy as a partnership, one where individuals can feel empowered to be their most genuine self and take ownership of their stories and values. I strive to create a nonjudgmental, warm, and culturally affirming environment where individuals can find a sense of relief from life’s biggest challenges and work towards their own healing. I view every client as a unique individual and will adapt my approach based on what they need. When appropriate and if the client is comfortable with it, I also enjoy adding in some lightness and humor into sessions.

When a client comes to me for psychotherapy the first goal is to fully understand the nature of their discontent in the context of a warm, open, nonjudgmental space. We work together to create a vision of what it will look like when the client is feeling more content, and then within the therapeutic relationship move toward change that will realize the client's vision. I am a combination of warm, supportive, directive, interpretive, and reflective. The therapy may be short term or long term, and may be individual or with significant others (family or partner).

I have significant experience with adolescents and families who feel “stuck” in anxiety or panic even to the point of avoiding school, work, or other major life hurdles. I have developed programs and training opportunities for organizations to learn how to use willingness and sitting with discomfort to take actions toward the value path. I have led dozens of groups, trainings, and has supervised numerous psychologists in training.

I believe that we all have an inherent need to feel connected, seen, and understood and that is often where the growth, relief, and healing begins. My clinical work is based on a dynamic and relational approach that works collaboratively with clients to gain an understanding of how early experiences underlie behaviors, thoughts, feelings, and explore ways to connect with others. My approach is grounded in a social justice, sex-positive, and anti-oppressive lens, that posits an understanding of how systems of power and privilege manifest in individuals’ lives and impact individuals' ability to heal.

My field of expertise is working with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression or relationship challenges and working with couples. I enjoy working with young adults in transition who are feeling uncertain about employment, relationships or future- a quarter-life crisis. My other areas of interest include working with individuals who have experienced trauma and coping with the difficult emotions those experiences bring. When working with couples, I work with developing positive communication and relational skills to increase closeness, effectively adjust to life's challenges, and manage stress, anxiety and depression. I also enjoy working with adolescents and families to increase closeness and improve communication skills.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.
Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
