I am comfortable working with clients for short term problem resolution and longer standing concerns relating to family of origin, trauma, or addiction related issues.
I view counseling as a supportive and collaborative partnership where I assist you with working through difficult challenges. Together we will work to develop the emotional safety and support you need to make the changes you want. I know it can be hard to make changes and even hard to ask for help sometimes. I offer a compassionate, welcoming and affirming perspective backed up with tools and skills for problem resolution. With a respectful, caring and challenging environment you are able to achieve your goals.

I have an eclectic approach-integrating internal family systems, boundaries training, sand tray, and CBT.
I am a counselor with many years of overseas and cross-cultural experience, which has highlighted for me the strengths and challenges common to all people, no matter where we are from or now call home. Rocky transitions of all kinds, struggles with identity and unwanted behaviors, relationship and parenting issues, many types of loss and grief-are all areas I have experience in. I work with those who are interested in resolving past painful experiences, addressing present difficulties, and building towards a healthier future for themselves and those important to them.

I also use Internal Family Systems, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, EMDR and mindfulness.
I believe humans are built to survive - even the most grueling situations when hope feels lost or emptiness prevails. Perhaps we are forced to deal with things we cannot control or did not foresee. Sometimes surviving means we adapt in ways that don't serve us in the long run. This is when we need someone to journey into and out of the darkness with us. Whether it is your past that won’t get out of the way, current relationships that wane, a loss that bogs you down, depression and anxiety that run your life, or a trauma you can’t seem to shake, neurotherapy may be an option for you. Neurotherapy is Neurofeedback + Talk Therapy.

As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I look through a systems lens.
I specialize in families/couples, and I am an Idaho-licensed LMFT and Arizona-licensed LAMFT. Often clients seek therapy because they have become stuck. Sometimes relationships begin great, but life/situations cause a change to happen. We all have personal challenges, have stressful periods, or go through traumatic times. The desire to seek help to explore and process these problems can open the door to positive growth. I believe in the healing power of relationships: no matter the wounds, if all parties are willing to heal, I will help.

I am Level 1 trained in the Gottman Method of Couples Counseling, and I am currently undergoing training in PC-CARE for short-term family therapy.
I believe that humans are inherently tasked with searching for meaning in their life, finding purpose, and figuring out what makes life worth living. There is anxiety when you cannot find meaning or purpose, especially when it feels like the cards are stacked against you. When we are able to make meaning, identify what is important to us, and understand our beliefs, we can use these aspects to guide our behavior toward becoming the person we want to be.

People say my style is different from other counselors. "He's not the kind of counselor who just sits back and says uh-huh every few minutes." I am not shy about giving feedback and responding to my clients. Counseling is a relationship and I strive to create an engaging and healing dialogue from the beginning. Whatever your issue is, if it's not getting better with what you have been doing so far, now is the time to seek assistance. Call me to discuss your concerns and we can decide if I am the right resource for you.

I work with individuals, couples, and groups who believe personal change is possible and valuable in their lives. I use an emotion focused approach, as put forth in the work of Dr. Les Greenberg, and have received formal training in Dr. Sue Johnson's Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples. I believe that people are agents of their own positive change, and that many are unaware of how emotions relate to their thoughts and behavior. My clinical practice has taught me to respect the experience, worldview, and value system of each individual without imposing my own. I am an LGBTQ+ ally.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
